POSITION SUMMARY
The Shift Manager is responsible for overseeing the restaurant during an assigned shift and ensuring that guests receive an exceptional dining experience while maintaining high standards for food quality, service, cleanliness, safety, and team performance.
The Shift Manager serves as a leader on the floor and is responsible for directing staff, resolving guest concerns, managing the flow of service, monitoring sales and labor, and ensuring all opening, closing, and shift procedures are completed correctly.
This position requires a hands-on leader who is comfortable working alongside the team while also holding employees accountable to company standards and policies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIESShift Operations
- Take ownership of restaurant operations during assigned shifts.
- Complete opening, mid-shift, and closing procedures as assigned.
- Ensure the restaurant is properly staffed, organized, clean, and ready for service.
- Monitor the flow of service and adjust staffing or assignments as needed.
- Communicate important information between shifts and with management.
- Ensure all company policies, procedures, and service standards are followed.
- Address operational issues promptly and notify the General Manager of significant concerns.
Team Leadership & Accountability
- Lead by example and maintain a professional, positive, and team-oriented work environment.
- Assign sections, side work, breaks, and other shift responsibilities.
- Monitor employee performance throughout the shift.
- Coach employees on service standards, attendance, appearance, teamwork, and job performance.
- Address minor employee performance issues appropriately and document concerns when necessary.
- Recognize employees who demonstrate exceptional performance.
- Assist with training and onboarding of new employees.
- Ensure employees are following proper uniform, grooming, and workplace standards.
Guest Experience
- Maintain a visible presence on the restaurant floor.
- Ensure guests receive prompt, friendly, and professional service.
- Monitor tables and check in with guests throughout their experience.
- Respond to guest complaints and service issues professionally and promptly.
- Empower the team to resolve reasonable guest concerns while protecting the interests of the business.
- Escalate serious complaints or incidents to the General Manager.
- Help create a welcoming and memorable guest experience.
Food & Beverage Standards
- Monitor food presentation, portioning, temperature, and overall quality.
- Ensure beverages and food are delivered accurately and in a timely manner.
- Communicate with the kitchen regarding ticket times, shortages, special requests, and service issues.
- Ensure proper food safety and sanitation procedures are followed.
- Monitor product availability and communicate shortages to management.
- Ensure alcohol service complies with company policies and applicable Montana requirements.
Cash & Financial Responsibilities
- Follow all cash-handling and POS procedures.
- Verify tills and cash drawers according to company policy.
- Monitor discounts, comps, voids, refunds, and other POS adjustments.
- Ensure credit card, cash, and other payment procedures are followed correctly.
- Complete required shift paperwork and financial reports accurately.
- Report discrepancies or unusual transactions to management immediately.
- Protect company assets and maintain appropriate security procedures.
Safety, Sanitation & Security
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe restaurant environment.
- Conduct regular checks of dining areas, restrooms, bar areas, and other guest-facing spaces.
- Ensure employees follow sanitation and safety procedures.
- Respond appropriately to accidents, injuries, emergencies, or other safety concerns.
- Report maintenance, equipment, or facility issues to management.
- Follow all procedures regarding intoxicated guests, disruptive behavior, and other security concerns.
Communication & Administration
- Maintain clear communication with the General Manager, kitchen leadership, and other supervisors.
- Complete shift notes and communicate important events or concerns.
- Monitor reservations, large parties, private events, and special guest requests as applicable.
- Assist with scheduling and staffing needs when requested.
- Participate in management meetings and training.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding employee, guest, and company information.
OPENING & CLOSING RESPONSIBILITIES
Depending on the assigned shift, the Shift Manager may be responsible for:
Opening:
- Verify restaurant cleanliness and readiness.
- Check staffing and assignments.
- Verify cash tills.
- Review reservations, events, and special requests.
- Ensure kitchen, bar, and dining areas are prepared for service.
- Conduct a pre-shift meeting with staff.
Closing:
- Ensure all closing side work is completed.
- Verify dining room, bar, kitchen, and restroom cleanliness.
- Complete cash and POS procedures.
- Ensure doors, equipment, lights, and other closing procedures are completed.
- Review and complete shift paperwork.
- Communicate important information to the next day's management team.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous restaurant, hospitality, or supervisory experience preferred.
- Previous leadership or shift management experience preferred.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to handle cash and operate a POS system accurately.
- Ability to multitask and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to remain professional when handling difficult guests or employee situations.
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other high-volume periods as required.
- Must meet all applicable requirements for alcohol service and employment in Montana.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment as reasonably required.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and move throughout the restaurant during a shift.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment for extended periods.
Pay: $17.00 - $25.00 per hour
