Location: Northeastern North Carolina (Primary responsibility for the Raleigh area and counties to the north and east. )
Job Summary
The State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors is seeking a professional, self-motivated Field Investigator to investigate alleged violations of North Carolina licensing laws and Board rules governing plumbing, heating, and fire sprinkler contractors.
This position also serves as a representative of the Board by attending industry meetings, trade events, and public outreach activities.
Responsibilities
- Investigate complaints involving potential violations of North Carolina licensing laws and Board regulations.
- Conduct field investigations and gather evidence.
- Prepare clear, accurate investigative reports and correspondence.
- Interview complainants, witnesses, contractors, and other involved parties.
- Maintain detailed investigative records.
- Provide testimony during hearings or legal proceedings when required.
- Represent the Board at industry meetings, conferences, and educational events.
- Travel throughout the assigned territory and occasionally statewide or out of state.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screening.
- Current North Carolina Notary Public commission or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidates will possess:
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong written communication skills, including report writing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and other standard business software.
- Experience using laptops, smartphones, scanners, printers, and other electronic devices.
- Experience conducting investigations and preparing investigative reports.
- Experience providing testimony in hearings or court proceedings.
- Technical training or experience in plumbing, heating, fire sprinkler systems, inspections, code enforcement, or a related construction trade.
Physical & Travel Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Travel frequently throughout the assigned region, based in the Raleigh area.
- Travel statewide and occasionally out of state, including overnight travel.
- Work occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Stand, walk, crawl, climb, and access crawl spaces, attics, rooftops, and other confined or elevated work areas.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
