Teacher Assigned – Teacher Assigned – Citywide Intensive Reading Interventionist (K-8)
One-year position – Position commences September 2026

Applicants must possess a valid New York State certificate and tenure is preferred in one of the following:
- Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 2)
- Childhood Education (Common Branch) (grades 1-6)
- Literacy (birth-grade 6)
- Students with Disabilities (birth-grade 2)
- Students with Disabilities (grades 1-6)
- English to Speakers of other Languages (all grades) (including bilingual)
- Speech and Language Disabilities (all grades)
- At least eight years of successful teaching experience working in schools with significant experience in either elementary or middle schools
- A minimum of five years of satisfactory, effective, or highly effective ratings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of reading and writing acquisition and development.
- Proven experience and expertise in the implementation of evidence-based interventions and assessments.
- Demonstrated success working collaboratively with other professional staff on reading and writing instruction intervention implementation, and assessments.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience as a NYPS (New York Public Schools) Intensive Reading Interventionist
- Knowledge of and commitment to research-based/proven approaches to reading and writing instruction
- Knowledge and expertise in delivering research-based reading interventions to students in need of instructional support (previous training and implementation of the Wilson Reading System is preferred)
- Knowledge and expertise in assessing students using Acadience Reading Benchmark, Progress Monitoring and Diagnostic assessments
- Knowledge and expertise in administering diagnostic assessments to students to identify areas of need
- Understanding of research-based intervention practices, theory concerning the science of reading and connected research-based/proven practices
- Experience participating in and/or conducting collaborative data meetings
- Well-developed ability to analyze, organize, and clearly explain data to indicate impact and implications for reading instruction
The Intensive Reading Interventionist works to plan and implement research-based explicit, systematic interventions with students across grade levels (K-8). The Intensive Reading Interventionist is a district-based position. The Intensive Reading Interventionist will report to one school a day at the discretion of their direct supervisor. Interventionists will support screening for risk of dyslexia or other language-based learning differences, work with school teams to identify students in need of interventions, support with alignment of interventions, and provide intensive intervention instruction with small groups of students across the week.
- Deliver research-based intervention practices to small groups of at-risk students 4 times per week.
- Administer weekly progress monitoring to evaluate overall student response to intervention 1x per week.
- Analyze universal screening data 3x a year with school level data teams.
- Administer diagnostic assessments to students identified as at risk of later reading difficulties as per the universal screening and identified cut points.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers on the generalization of skills outside of intervention schedule
- Attend and participate in progress monitoring meetings to report on student progress through individual student profiles.
- Work with district and school leadership to build capacity to deliver interventions to students at-risk
- Work collaboratively with families to inform of student progress through family engagement and conferences
- Collaborate with district-based AIS Coordinators
- Participate in professional development provided by NYC Public Schools Central based staff.
As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement: 8:00AM – 4:00PM Monday through Friday
School year plus five additional days during winter, spring, or summer vacation period. Position commences September 2026.
