Accepting Resumes for Full-Time Animal Control Officer
The Humane Society of Carroll County (HSCC) is accepting resumes for a Full-Time Animal Control Officer. This position plays a vital role in protecting animal welfare and public safety throughout Carroll County, Maryland.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Rescue animals from dangerous situations, including handling sick, injured, vicious, and impounded animals. euthanizes injured animals.
Work closely with area Police agencies
Interact with and educate the public regarding responsible companion animal ownership and provisions of the Carroll County Code
Operate an official Animal Control vehicle and act as a mobile representative of HSCC and Animal Control values
Respond to calls, investigations, and assist other field staff as needed
Prepare reports, legal documents, and testify in court
Answer phone calls and dispatch calls to Officers
Dog license sales and data entry
Evidence collection and documentation procedures.
Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned by the Director of Animal Control Operations.
Knowledge/skills and Abilities
Knowledge of and ability to safely handle all domestic, exotic, and wild animals
Knowledge and/or experience with state and local animal laws and enforcement techniques
Ability to multi-task with minimal supervision
Strong research skills
Mental, Physical and Communications Demands
Pet breed identification; traits; and behavior.
Clear criminal background record
Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and professionally with the public, board members, volunteers, donors, and employees
Ability to work on-call nights, weekends, and holidays
Certification requirements (or ability to obtain within required timeframes):
Euthanasia by Injection (EBI) – within 6 months of hire
Chemical Capture – within 1 year of hire
Pepper Spray (OC) – within 6 months of hire
Successfully complete an Animal Control Officers training program
Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office, email, Internet, and Chameleon database management software
Maintain pre-exposure rabies vaccination
Ability and willingness to travel out of the area as needed for education and certification purposes
Carroll County, MD resident preferred
This position is classified as essential and requires work during shelter/general emergencies
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
Criminal justice or animal related coursework
Animal control work experience
Security / law enforcement / animal welfare enforcement work experience
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly; 50+ pounds with assistance.
Comfortable working with cats, dogs, small animals, livestock, reptiles, fish, and wildlife.
Ability to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including lifting, carrying, running, reaching, stooping, squatting, standing, and bending.
Potential exposure to deceased, aggressive, or fractious animals; hostile or irate individuals; zoonotic diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, sights; and extreme temperatures.
Education and Experience
Must be 21 years of age or older
High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum of two (2) years of animal handling experience in a setting such as a veterinary clinic, boarding kennel, animal shelter or similar and comfortable with all animals (care of personal pets not excepted)
