A Boat Electrician specializes in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical and electronic systems on marine vessels. They play a vital role in ensuring the functionality and safety of electrical components, from navigation systems to power distribution, adhering to marine industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Electrical Installation:
◦ Install and wire marine electrical systems, including navigation lights, circuit panels, batteries, and inverters.
◦ Set up advanced marine electronics such as GPS, sonar, radar, and communication systems.
◦ Configure power supply systems like alternators, generators, and shore power connections.
• Diagnostics and Troubleshooting:
◦ Diagnose issues with electrical systems using tools like multimeters and oscilloscopes.
◦ Identify faults in wiring, components, or equipment and recommend effective solutions.
◦ Repair or replace defective electrical components, wiring, or connectors.
• System Maintenance:
◦ Perform routine maintenance checks on electrical systems to ensure optimal performance.
◦ Test and calibrate electrical and electronic systems after installations or repairs.
• Compliance and Safety:
◦ Ensure all work complies with marine industry standards (e.g., ABYC, USCG regulations).
◦ Implement safety protocols to prevent electrical hazards, including proper grounding and insulation techniques.
• Customer Support:
◦ Communicate effectively with boat owners to explain system functions, maintenance needs, and potential upgrades.
◦ Offer recommendations for new equipment or system enhancements tailored to customer requirements.
Skills and Qualifications
• Technical Expertise:
◦ Deep knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems, marine wiring practices, and battery systems.
◦ Proficiency with marine electronic devices and integration techniques.
◦ Familiarity with troubleshooting tools and electrical diagnostic equipment.
• Physical Capability:
◦ Ability to work in tight or confined spaces on boats and marine vessels.
◦ Comfortable lifting and maneuvering heavy equipment and tools.
• Problem-Solving and Detail Orientation:
◦ Strong analytical skills for diagnosing and resolving complex electrical issues.
◦ Meticulous attention to detail to ensure safe and reliable system operation.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Certification in marine electrical systems (preferred).
- Relevant experience in marine or industrial electrical systems (2+ years preferred).
Work Environment
- Work may take place in marinas, docks, or shipyards, often outdoors.
- Occasional travel may be required for on-site installations or repairs.
