Senior Embedded Systems Engineer
Senior Embedded Systems Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer to lead design, development, and optimization of firmware and embedded software for real-time, resource-constrained products. This role will own end-to-end embedded solutions from hardware bring-up and board support to high-quality C++ firmware and architecture, working closely with cross-functional teams and mentoring junior engineers. The ideal candidate combines deep embedded software expertise, hands-on hardware experience, RTOS knowledge, and demonstrated leadership.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead design and implementation of embedded firmware and software (primarily C/C++) for microcontroller-based products.
-
Architect and develop real-time systems using RTOS, including task scheduling, synchronization, and low-latency interrupt handling.
-
Collaborate with hardware engineers on board bring-up, schematics review, PCB bring-up, and hardware/software integration.
-
Create and maintain device drivers, BSPs, bootloaders, and communication stacks (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet, Bluetooth, etc.).
-
Define software architecture, coding standards, and best practices; perform design reviews and code reviews to ensure quality and maintainability.
-
Lead debugging and root-cause analysis of complex hardware/firmware issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD debuggers, and other lab tools.
-
Coordinate system-level testing, validation, and performance optimization (power, memory, latency) across hardware and firmware.
-
Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior and mid-level engineers; help grow the teams embedded capabilities.
-
Drive feature planning and delivery in sprint cycles; estimate tasks, manage technical risk, and communicate progress to stakeholders.
Qualifications
-
Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
-
10+ years of professional experience developing embedded firmware and software; demonstrable C/C++ expertise.
-
Proven experience with RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX, VxWorks, or similar) and real-time system design.
-
Hands-on hardware experience including schematic review, PCB bring-up, interfacing with sensors and peripherals, and using lab instrumentation.
-
Experience writing device drivers, bootloaders, and low-level BSP code; familiarity with MCU families (ARM Cortex-M, RISC-V, etc.).
-
Strong debugging skills with JTAG/SWD, hardware trace, logic analyzers, and serial protocols; ability to diagnose cross-domain issues.
-
Solid understanding of embedded system constraints: memory management, power optimization, and timing determinism.
-
Demonstrated leadership experience: mentoring engineers, leading technical projects, conducting reviews, and driving delivery.
-
Familiarity with version control (Git), CI/CD for embedded, unit testing, and static analysis tools; experience with Agile development.
-
Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively across hardware, software, QA, and product teams.
