Phased Alloy Research & Testing Services, LLC (PARTS), doing business as Bess MTI, is seeking an NDT Inspector / Materials Testing Technician to join our Hayward laboratory.
This position is ideal for an NDT technician who wants to expand beyond traditional inspection work. The successful candidate will primarily support our nondestructive testing operations while receiving cross-training in mechanical testing, specimen preparation, metallography, hardness testing, load testing, and machining.
We are looking for someone who is mechanically inclined, dependable, willing to learn, and interested in developing a broad technical skill set within an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited materials testing laboratory.
Candidates with existing PT and MT Level II experience are strongly preferred; however, we will consider candidates with relevant inspection, welding, machining, mechanical testing, or laboratory experience who have the aptitude and interest to develop into the position.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform liquid penetrant testing (PT) and magnetic particle testing (MT) in accordance with applicable procedures, specifications, codes, and customer requirements.
- Perform visual inspections and dimensional examinations as required.
- Document inspection results and prepare accurate NDT reports.
- Maintain proper identification and traceability of customer parts and test specimens.
- Perform required equipment checks and assist with maintaining NDT equipment and consumables.
- Read and interpret drawings, specifications, procedures, and applicable acceptance criteria.
- Assist with mechanical and materials testing operations.
- Cross-train in tensile testing, Charpy impact testing, hardness testing, microhardness testing, and load testing.
- Assist with metallographic specimen preparation, including sectioning, mounting, grinding, and polishing.
- Learn basic optical microscopy and digital microscope operation for routine materials evaluation.
- Perform specimen preparation and general machining using laboratory machine-shop equipment as qualified.
- Use micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring equipment.
- Assist with fabrication, setup, and modification of test fixtures when required.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and follow established quality procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Assist other laboratory personnel with testing and specimen handling as workload requires.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in NDT, inspection, machining, welding, mechanical testing, manufacturing, or a related technical field.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to work hands-on with laboratory and machine-shop equipment.
- Ability to read and understand technical procedures, specifications, drawings, and work instructions.
- Ability to use basic precision measuring equipment.
- Ability to accurately document work performed and inspection/test results.
- Ability to safely handle customer parts, test specimens, fixtures, and laboratory equipment.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a small technical team.
- Willingness to cross-train in multiple laboratory disciplines.
- Ability to meet applicable NDT vision requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred but are not required for every candidate:
- Documented PT Level II training and experience.
- Documented MT Level II training and experience.
- VT experience.
- Current or previous employer-based NDT Level II certification.
- Experience working under an employer written practice based on ASNT requirements.
- Experience with ASTM, AWS, ASME, aerospace, military, or customer-specific specifications.
- Mechanical or materials testing experience.
- Tensile, Charpy, hardness, or load-testing experience.
- Metallographic specimen preparation experience.
- Manual mill, lathe, CNC, or general machining experience.
- Welding or fabrication experience.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- Experience working within an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory.
Training and Career Development
This position is intended to develop into a cross-functional technical role.
Depending on previous experience, the employee may receive training and qualification in areas including:
- PT and MT Level II
- Visual inspection
- Tensile testing
- Charpy impact testing
- Hardness and microhardness testing
- Metallographic specimen preparation
- Optical/digital microscopy
- Load testing
- Specimen machining and preparation
Employees who demonstrate technical competency and take on additional qualified responsibilities may have opportunities for increased compensation and advancement.

Physical Requirements
This is a hands-on laboratory position and is not a desk-only inspection role.
The employee must be able to:
- Stand and work at laboratory equipment for extended periods.
- Safely handle test specimens and customer parts.
- Perform repetitive hands-on inspection and specimen preparation tasks.
- Work around machine-shop and materials-testing equipment.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Assist with moving or positioning heavier parts and fixtures using appropriate equipment and team lifting when necessary.
Compensation
$32.00–$40.00 per hour
Starting compensation will be based on documented NDT training and experience, certifications, mechanical aptitude, machining or materials-testing experience, and the candidate's ability to independently perform applicable laboratory work.
Highly qualified candidates with additional credentials such as AWS CWI, multiple NDT methods, extensive machining experience, or significant materials-testing experience may be considered based on their overall qualifications.
