Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine , as a Senior Programmer in our IT Enterprise Architecture department. This is a remote work from home opportunity, and you may be based outside of the greater Chicagoland area.
The Senior Programmer will be responsible for designing, developing, enhancing, deploying, and supporting enterprise web applications and automated solutions, with a primary focus on Python-based applications and services. The role requires strong hands-on experience with Python, REST APIs, Linux, SQL, and modern web application development, along with the ability to troubleshoot complex application and integration issues across multiple technology layers.
The Senior Programmer will work closely with business stakeholders, application teams, infrastructure, database, security, and other IT teams to translate business requirements into reliable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions.
Essential Job Functions
- Design, develop, maintain and enhance Python-based web applications, services, scripts, and automation solutions
- Develop backend services using Python and Node.js/Express.js and support frontend applications using Angular, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
- Support application builds, deployments, configuration management, and release activities through Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
- Diagnose application and integration issues using application logs, stack traces, SQL queries, HTTP responses, system logs, and operating system tools.
- Collaborate with Infrastructure, Database, Security, Networking, Integration, and other IT teams to resolve complex technical issues.
- Work with business analysts and stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Follow organizational security, privacy, change management, coding, and application development standards.
- Participate in code reviews, testing, quality assurance, and production support activities.
Integrate generative AI/LLM capabilities into applications and workflows, including LLM APIs, RAG, vector databases, and AI assisted automation where applicable.

- Knowledge about generative AI/LLM application development, including RAG, vector databases, prompt engineering, or AI workflow automation
Experience with Epic/Clarity or healthcare data environments
