Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience estimating commercial and industrial mechanical construction projects and be capable of preparing accurate, competitive, and complete estimates from plans, specifications, and project requirements.
This position requires someone who understands mechanical construction and how projects are actually built in the field, not simply how to enter numbers into estimating software.
The successful candidate must be organized, dependable, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently while coordinating with project managers, vendors, subcontractors, and customers.
Responsibilities
- Review construction drawings, specifications, bid documents, addenda, and project requirements.
- Prepare complete and accurate estimates for mechanical construction projects.
- Perform detailed material and labor takeoffs.
- Determine labor hours, material quantities, equipment requirements, subcontractor costs, and other project expenses.
- Review mechanical plans and specifications for HVAC, piping, plumbing, equipment, controls, and related mechanical systems.
- Solicit and review pricing from suppliers, manufacturers, and subcontractors.
- Compare vendor quotations and verify pricing and scope against project specifications.
- Prepare detailed bid proposals and pricing breakdowns.
- Identify exclusions, qualifications, scope gaps, conflicts, and potential project risks before bid submission.
- Assist with change-order pricing, revisions, and additional work requests.
- Work closely with project managers and field personnel to ensure estimates reflect actual construction methods and field conditions.
- Track bid invitations, deadlines, addenda, and proposal submissions.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and job walks when required.
- Communicate professionally with general contractors, owners, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Assist management with evaluating project opportunities and bidding strategies.
- Maintain organized and accurate estimating records and project documentation.
- Maintain confidentiality of company pricing, labor rates, vendor pricing, and estimating information.
Required Qualifications
- Previous Mechanical Estimating experience is required.
- Strong knowledge of commercial and/or industrial mechanical construction.
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings, mechanical plans, specifications, schedules, and details.
- Strong understanding of labor and material estimating.
- Experience performing detailed quantity takeoffs.
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, piping, plumbing, mechanical equipment, fittings, valves, and related construction materials.
- Understanding of construction sequencing and installation methods.
- Experience obtaining and evaluating supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Ability to prepare complete and professional bid proposals.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines at the same time.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Computer & Estimating Skills
Candidates must have basic computer knowledge and be comfortable working electronically on a daily basis, including:
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Outlook/email
- PDF drawings and specifications
- Electronic plan review
- Internet-based bidding platforms
- File organization and document management
Experience with estimating and takeoff software such as Bluebeam, PlanSwift, Trimble, FastPIPE, FastDUCT, QuoteSoft, Procore, BuildingConnected, or similar programs is highly preferred.
Candidates are not required to know every program listed above but must be comfortable with technology and capable of learning new estimating programs and systems.
Preferred Experience
- Several years of mechanical estimating experience.
- Commercial and industrial construction experience.
- Field experience in HVAC, plumbing, piping, or mechanical construction is a plus.
- Experience estimating projects from initial takeoff through final bid submission.
- Experience with hard bids, negotiated work, change orders, and design-build projects.
- Knowledge of current material pricing and construction labor requirements.
- Established relationships with mechanical suppliers and subcontractors are a plus.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a seasoned estimator who understands construction, not simply someone who knows how to operate estimating software.
The successful candidate should be able to review a complete set of plans, understand the scope of work, recognize missing information or potential problems, and develop a realistic estimate based on how the project will actually be constructed.
Accuracy, accountability, organization, and attention to detail are extremely important in this position.
Employment Requirements
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Professional attitude and appearance.
- Valid driver's license may be required for job-site visits.
- Ability to attend job walks and pre-bid meetings when necessary.
- Ability to meet strict bid deadlines.
- Willingness to work additional hours when necessary during critical bidding periods.
Compensation
Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume outlining their mechanical estimating experience, construction background, estimating/takeoff software experience, and the types of projects they have previously estimated.
