The Utilities and Central Energy (UCE) group specializes in large central plant work, particularly for district energy serving cities, universities, hospitals, and manufacturing campuses. POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Electrical Designer – Level III plays a key role in the successful execution of projects by developing and coordinating high-quality electrical drawings, models, and construction documents. This position is responsible for leading electrical design efforts on projects of varying size and complexity while ensuring accuracy, quality, and adherence to project requirements.
Working within a collaborative team environment, the Electrical Designer III coordinates closely with engineers, designers, project managers, clients, and other engineering disciplines to support integrated design solutions. The role includes planning and directing design activities, providing guidance to less experienced staff, and serving as a technical resource throughout all phases of the project lifecycle.
Success in this role requires advanced technical expertise, strong coordination and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to independently manage multiple design priorities while maintaining positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The Electrical Designer III supports projects from concept through construction by leading the CAD/Revit effort, coordinating multidisciplinary design activities, and contributing to successful project delivery.
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Active engagement with learning opportunities, both on the job and dedicated learning.

Gather electrical data from clients, architects, contractors, and other disciplines.

Lead coordination of work and construction documents with internal and external stakeholders (other disciplines, architects, owners, contractors, etc.).

Develop electrical room layouts including layout of electrical equipment (transformers, switchboards, switchgear, motor control centers, panelboards, etc.).

Size feeders and raceway systems (cable tray and conduit).

Perform advanced 2D and 3D modeling of electrical systems and coordinate clash detection efforts with other disciplines.

Perform voltage drop calculations, short circuit calculations, and other electrical design calculations.

Develop schematic diagrams, one-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams.

Gather and verify existing site conditions and field information.
-
Participate in site visits, construction observations, and field data collection efforts.

Write construction observation reports and respond to construction-related design questions.
-
Review shop drawings, submittals, and construction documents for compliance with design intent.

Provide mentorship, guidance, and technical support to less experienced electrical design staff.

Assist with project planning, scope development, budgeting, and scheduling efforts.

Support QA/QC reviews and help ensure accuracy and completeness of project deliverables.

Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients and project stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
-
AAS Degree/Diploma in Design/Drafting.
-
Minimum of 8+ years drafting/design experience, preferably in AutoCAD and Revit, in a consulting and/or construction capacity.

Experience working in Autodesk Revit for electrical design and coordinating with other disciplines in Revit.

Advanced ability to perform 3D modeling of electrical equipment and systems, including coordination with other disciplines.

Strong understanding of Architectural, Electrical, Civil, and Structural Engineering construction practices and drawings.
-
Working knowledge of applicable Codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA, IBC, IFC, Energy Code, Life Safety Code, etc.).

Application of Electrical Engineering Principles (e.g., Ohm's Law, overcurrent protection, grounding, fault current, voltage drop, and equipment coordination).

Knowledge of SKM Power Tools for Windows, ETAP, or EasyPower modeling software.
-
Knowledge of quality control procedures for document control purposes including QA/QC processes.

Ability to independently coordinate and execute electrical design efforts on multiple projects.

Proven ability to mentor and train less experienced designers.

Expert knowledge of technology and the application of technology in business.

Experience leading electrical design efforts on large or complex projects.

Experience with medium-voltage distribution systems.

Autodesk Revit certification or equivalent BIM experience.

Experience mentoring and developing technical staff.
