Japanese Academy of San Diego (JASD) is a private bilingual Japanese-English school serving elementary-aged students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Our goal is to provide students with a strong academic foundation while developing Japanese language skills, cultural understanding, creativity, independence, and respect for others.
We are seeking a passionate and creative Music, Art & Calligraphy Teacher who can provide engaging, meaningful instruction and help students develop their artistic skills while gaining an appreciation for Japanese culture and traditional arts.
Position Overview
The Music, Art & Calligraphy Teacher will be responsible for planning, preparing, and implementing engaging curriculum for elementary school students. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about working with children and able to create a positive, structured, and encouraging classroom environment.

Responsibilities
- Plan and develop age-appropriate curriculum and lesson plans for music, art, and Japanese calligraphy.
- Prepare classroom materials, supplies, and activities in advance of each lesson.
- Teach engaging hands-on lessons that encourage creativity, self-expression, and skill development.
- Introduce students to a variety of artistic techniques, materials, musical concepts, and traditional Japanese arts.
- Teach Japanese calligraphy (書道) techniques appropriate for elementary-aged students.
- Incorporate Japanese culture and traditions into lessons when appropriate.
- Adjust lessons and activities to accommodate different ages, abilities, and learning styles.
- Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and well-organized classroom environment.
- Provide clear instructions and constructive feedback to students.
- Supervise students appropriately and maintain classroom safety.
- Manage classroom materials and maintain an organized learning environment.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and school administration regarding student needs, curriculum, schedules, and special projects.
- Prepare student artwork, performances, or projects for school events and presentations when appropriate.
- Communicate professionally with staff, students, and families.
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and expectations.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will:
- Have experience teaching children, preferably elementary-aged students.
- Have a strong background or demonstrated ability in one or more of the following areas:
- Music
- Visual arts
- Japanese calligraphy (書道)
- Japanese traditional arts and culture
- Be creative, patient, enthusiastic, and dependable.
- Enjoy working with children and creating hands-on learning experiences.
- Be comfortable planning and preparing lessons independently.
- Be able to manage a classroom in a calm, positive, and professional manner.
- Have strong communication and organizational skills.
- Be open to collaborating with classroom teachers and school administration.
- Have an appreciation for Japanese culture and the mission of a bilingual Japanese-English school.
Japanese language ability is preferred but not required. Candidates with strong expertise in music, art, or calligraphy are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications
- Previous teaching, tutoring, coaching, or youth education experience preferred.
- Relevant education, professional experience, training, or demonstrated expertise in music, art, calligraphy, or a related field.
- Experience working with elementary-aged children preferred.
- Ability to develop and implement age-appropriate lessons.
- Must be dependable, professional, and able to work effectively as part of a school team.
- Successful completion of required background checks and other school employment requirements.
