American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit position at a freestanding acute inpatient behavioral health facility in Bangor, ME, requiring at least 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience and an active ME or compact RN license.

Night shift position, 7PM–7AM, 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week

Freestanding acute inpatient behavioral health facility with a contracted ER located 5 minutes away

Pediatric psychiatric unit serving patients ages 5–18; floating required between pediatric and adult units (ages 18+ including geriatric)

Pediatric patient population includes diagnoses such as Eating Disorders, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria

Adult patient population most commonly presents with Schizophrenia, MDD, and Bipolar Disorder; also includes Eating Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, and medically-cleared Substance Use Disorder/CIWA patients

All patients are admitted through an ED and are medically cleared prior to arrival; lines, drains, and tubes are not typically present

Facility accepts both voluntary and involuntary admissions; no forensic patients or inmates

Night shift RN ratio is 1:13 with resource and nursing support; day shift ratio is 1:5–6

Psych Tech support: Peds unit has 6 techs on days and 2 on nights; Adult unit has 2 techs on both days and nights

Charting system: Cerner; Pyxis used for medication management

Weekend rotation: every other Saturday and Sunday

No on-call requirements

Holidays worked on a rotating basis

Modified self-scheduling: travelers sign up for preferred shifts, with manager review and adjustment to ensure coverage; predetermined weekend rotation assigned

Active RN license — ME state license or compact license required

Current BLS certification required

Minimum 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience required

Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred; candidates without pediatric experience may still be considered with manager approval

De-escalation experience and experience with physical restraints (chemical restraints are not used)

Proficiency with medication administration and documentation
-
Comfort running group sessions preferred
-
Candidate's permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility to be eligible

Candidates must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity

Two professional references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurses accepted; peer references not accepted)

Copies of all current certifications required for consideration

Full SSN required for consideration

Driver's license required for consideration

Flu vaccination required for clearance to start

MOAB (Management of Assaultive Behavior) certification is obtained on-site during orientation and is not required prior to starting

Orientation consists of the first week (Monday–Friday) on day shifts, followed by the second week on the contracted shift schedule

The facility provides traditional medical and psychiatric care as well as specialized therapies including pet therapy, group sessions, and community garden programs
-
Seclusion rooms are available and used when clinically necessary
-
In escalation situations, a designated code leader verbally de-escalates while assigning roles to other staff; travelers may be asked to serve as code leader

A debriefing form is completed following any escalation event; management rounds on code situations to provide support
-
Scenario-based de-escalation training is offered every other week, and travelers are encouraged to communicate any need for additional practice

A MOAB Educator/Trainer is on site to support staff
-
Support staff includes a Nurse Supervisor (evenings/weekends), Nurse Manager (days), House Administrator (overnight/weekends), Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted Phlebotomist, NP (on site until 4PM, on call overnight), Psychiatrist (daily rounds and on call midnight–6AM), and Occupational Therapist (8AM–4:30PM, 7 days/week)

Security is on site but does not respond to patient escalations; staff from all units, including techs and nurses, respond to escalations

The facility manager is described as very approachable and encourages travelers to bring any concerns directly to them

Scrubs must be any solid color and professional in appearance

Heavy snow conditions are expected during winter months

Time off requests of up to 7 days may be approved; assignments may need to be extended if all shifts within a week cannot be completed
