Join Hornet’s first-in-class Field Service team installing, training, troubleshooting, and repairing CNC plasma, oxy-fuel, and waterjet cutting systems across North America.
Hornet Cutting Systems is a proudly American-owned OEM manufacturer based in Valley Center, Kansas. We design and build American-made CNC cutting machines and support customers across the U.S. and beyond. Travel & Schedule Reality (Please Read)
This role is ideal for technicians who want a travel-based field service career.
- Travel: Typically 60–75% annually (some periods may be lighter or heavier)
- Territory: Lower 48 U.S., with occasional international travel
- Trip length: commonly 2–5 days; some trips longer
- Notice: some assignments may be short-notice based on customer need
- In-office days: phone support, prep, and team collaboration when not traveling
Hours of Work
- In-office days: Generally 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, unless otherwise directed by leadership.
- On-site/travel days: Work hours vary based on customer requirements, travel logistics, and service demands.
- Additional time: Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required based on business needs.
Compensation & Travel Benefits
- Starting pay based on experience, skills, and applicable background

What You’ll Do
- Install, commission, and service CNC plasma, oxy-fuel, and waterjet systems
- Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs
- Work across mechanical systems, drives, motors, controls, and software/HMI
- Train customer operators on machine operation and basic maintenance
- Provide high-quality on-site and phone support
- Document findings and communicate clearly with customers and internal teams
- Provide field feedback to Engineering/Operations for continuous improvement
- Support in-house production equipment service needs when on-site at Hornet
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Solid customer-facing communication skills and professionalism
- Ability to travel up to 75%+ and adapt to changing schedules
- Valid driver’s license and insurable MVR
- Ability to pass background check and drug screen
- Ability to lift 75 lbs+ and perform physically active tasks (stoop, bend, kneel, climb, reach)
- Ability to work in varied environments (heat, cold, dust, noise)
- Ability to drive long distances when required
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong understanding of electrical circuitry, drives, motors, and automation controls
- Experience with 3-phase/high-voltage diagnostics
- 3+ years automation experience (5+ preferred)
- CNC/plasma/waterjet service experience
- PLC or similar control platform troubleshooting experience
- Prior field service and phone support experience
- Strong planning, documentation, and time management habits

Education
Associate degree in Industrial Automation, Machine Maintenance, or related field preferred (or equivalent work experience).

Pay: $69,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
