Overview
American Van Lines is seeking an experienced Driver Trainer to train, mentor, and support drivers and moving crews in the Household Goods (HHG) industry. This role requires a hands-on professional with experience in residential, corporate, employee relocation, and military moves, who can teach proper packing, loading, and transportation techniques.
This individual must have a teacher’s mindset, demonstrating patience, professionalism, and the ability to clearly explain procedures while ensuring full compliance with DOT, HOS, and FMCSA regulations. In addition to training in the field, this person will serve as an ongoing resource for drivers, providing real-time support and guidance while they are on the road.
Key Responsibilities
- Train drivers and movers on:
- Household goods packing (HHG)
- Proper loading and unloading of trucks
- Safe handling of furniture and high-value items
- Conduct hands-on, in-field training during live moves
- Teach and reinforce DOT, HOS, and FMCSA regulations
- Instruct on ELD usage, logs, and compliance requirements
- Demonstrate best practices for truck loading, weight distribution, and space utilization
- Evaluate trainee performance and provide coaching and feedback
- Promote safety, efficiency, and high-quality service standards
- Serve as a point of contact for drivers on the road, answering questions and providing operational and compliance guidance in real time
- Lead by example and reinforce company standards and professionalism
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 3+ years as a CDL driver in the Household Goods (HHG) moving industry
- Hands-on experience with:
- Packing household goods
- Loading/unloading moving trucks
- Residential, corporate, employee relocation, and military moves
- Prior training, mentoring, or leadership experience preferred
Licensing & Credentials:
- Valid CDL Class A license (REQUIRED)
- Clean driving record
- Valid DOT medical card
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening
Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of:
- DOT regulations
- Hours of Service (HOS)
- FMCSA compliance
- ELD systems and log management
- HHG moving operations and best practices
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong communication and teaching ability
- Patient, approachable, and able to answer questions clearly
- Ability to coach and develop others with different learning styles
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Strong leadership and problem-solving skills
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs
- Ability to perform physically demanding moving work
- Willingness to travel and work in field environments
