The Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota Medical School consists of 19 Clinical departments and 6 Basic Science departments. It was determined approximately 20 years ago that an effective model was needed to support departments regardless of size with the expertise required to manage all aspects of this complex organization structure. Currently there are six Clinical administrative centers and two Basic Science administrative centers. The range of departments per center is 1 to 4 and is dependent on size, scope, and in some cases natural connection of departments. Each administrative center provides administrative services to clusters of departments at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Finance, human resources, and grant pre-award processes have been centralized in these clusters, with staff working in teams.
Centralized administrative services provide many benefits, including:
Shared knowledge between departments, and high-impact customer service.
Small departments receive the same level of service as large departments.
Expanded skill sets for staff lead to better support for their unit’s faculty and mission.
We become greater than the sum of our parts through collaboration and close working relationships.
-
Consistent practices across departments equals better internal audit results.
The administrative center this position serves and supports is the FOD Center, which includes the departments of Family Medicine and Community Health, Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences, and Dermatology.
