As our Senior Director, Assistant Controller, you'll play a critical leadership role in shaping the financial foundation that enables our continued growth as a publicly traded company. Reporting directly to the Vice President, Corporate Controller, you'll serve as one of the most influential leaders within the Finance organization—responsible for strengthening the integrity, scalability, and strategic direction of ThredUp's global accounting function.
Drive Enterprise Accounting Leadership: Oversee global month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, financial reporting, and balance sheet governance while continuing to build a highly scalable, audit-ready accounting function.
Lead Public Company Financial Stewardship: Serve as the technical accounting expert on complex matters (including ASC 606, ASC 842, ASC 718, and ASC 350-40) and provide key oversight for SEC reporting support.
Oversee Accounting Operations & Internal Controls: Partner closely with accounting operations leadership to ensure operational excellence across Record-to-Report, Procure-to-Pay, Payroll, Fixed Assets, Treasury, Inventory, and SOX compliance.
Champion Accounting Transformation & AI Innovation: Execute the long-term roadmap for close acceleration, ERP optimization, process automation, and the integration of AI-enabled workflows (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini).
Act as an Executive Business Partner: Provide strategic accounting guidance early in business planning, helping executive leadership (CFO, Controller, FP&A, Legal, HR, Engineering, DC Operations) evaluate financial implications and risks.
Direct External Audit & Regulatory Relationships: Lead relationships with external auditors and advisors, directing quarterly reviews and annual audits while maintaining year-round audit readiness.
Develop & Mentor Future Leaders: Build, lead, and develop a high-performing accounting team rooted in accountability, continuous learning, psychological safety, and operational excellence.
15+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant public company leadership and at least 7 years managing and developing high-performing accounting teams.
Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license and a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Big Four public accounting experience strongly preferred).
Deep technical expertise in U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting, PCAOB standards, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), and internal controls.
Strong technical accounting knowledge across revenue recognition, lease accounting, stock-based compensation, software capitalization, and inventory accounting.
Hands-on ERP & systems experience, including required proficiency in NetSuite and advanced Excel/Google Sheets (experience with FloQast, Workiva, Coupa, or Equity Edge is a plus).
Tech-forward & AI-minded approach, with demonstrated enthusiasm or experience evaluating and implementing automation and AI-enabled tools to streamline operations.
Industry experience within high-growth e-commerce, consumer marketplace, retail, logistics, or consumer products organizations is strongly preferred.
Transformational leadership style, with exceptional cross-functional influence, executive presence, and a strategic systems-thinking mindset.
At ThredUp, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role pays between $280,000 and $350,000, and your actual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Many ThredUp employees also have the opportunity to own shares of ThredUp stock, ThredUp employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, as well as a discount when purchasing ThredUp stock if voluntarily participating in ThredUp’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
