Project Sentinel is a non-profit civil rights agency that has advanced fair housing goals since 1976 by counseling and investigating complaints of housing discrimination. We seek to develop and promote fairness and equality of opportunity in all areas of housing for all persons. In addition to fair housing investigation and enforcement the agency also has a separate program that provides comprehensive Tenant/Landlord counseling and dispute resolution services to tenants, landlords and managers of rental properties. The agency currently makes its services available to 2.5 million people in five diverse Bay Area counties: Alameda, Sacramento, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Stanislaus.

THE POSITION
We are hiring a hybrid, full-time (40 hours/week), Fair Housing Coordinator to service the community. Fair Housing Coordinators educate, counsel, and advocate for victims of housing discrimination, investigate incidences of housing discrimination, and undertake outreach and education activities in the community at large. This is a challenging, rewarding position that offers a real opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide fair housing intake, education/referral, counseling, and advocacy services, including intervening on behalf of tenants to resolve fair housing issues, researching and analyzing legal issues, drafting written materials such as education letters and reasonable accommodation requests, and assisting staff attorneys at pop-up clinics to provide brief fair housing counseling services.
- Develop/oversee case investigations, including interviewing witnesses, surveying sites, collecting and analyzing documents, and researching public records.
- Engage in community outreach and education on fair housing issues, and act as the agency liaison with government officials and other organizations. Please note: A valid DL and current insurance policy, or reliable transportation to perform such community outreach duties, are required to meet this obligation. All expenses incurred for business travel and mileage are payable under CA Labor Code 2802.
- Contribute to program development and administration, including drafting funding proposals, and work collaboratively with other agency personnel, funding sources, and other nonprofit agencies in the community.
- Track data and compile quarterly reports as required by funders.
· Attend weekly team meetings via Teams and be easily accessible during working hours.
· Assist in other duties as assigned to further the interests and mission of the agency.
Qualifications & Skills
- Candidate must have a demonstrated desire to work to further civil rights protections, and a desire to work and interact with, as well as demonstrate respect for, diverse individuals and groups without regard to race, religion, sex, color, national origin, sexual orientation, familial status, or disability.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Prior experience in non-profit work and/or experience in housing issues is highly desirable
- Capacity to work and think independently, proactively, and without close supervision.
- Ability to handle an active caseload and manage short timelines.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Strong analytical thinking and organizational skills.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain accurate records.
- Creative problem-solving skills and a strong desire to help people.
- Must be willing and able to travel within Silicon Valley as needed to investigate housing discrimination & engage in outreach/education
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This position is classified as a full-time hybrid position. The working hours for this position are Monday-Friday, with a 35-hour workweek. Salary range is $29.00 to $30.00 an hour. Hybrid positions are also entitled to a monthly communication stipend, paid once a month, at the end of the month, and upon employee agreement.
Benefits include employer-paid health and life benefits for all full-time employees. Employees will also receive a generous prorated sick (9 days annually) as well as prorated vacation and holiday pay. Payable hours are based on the employee's current daily work schedule. Our holiday package includes floating holidays, yearly birthday holidays as well as a yearly agency-wide winter holiday closure observed during the week of Christmas-New Year! Supplemental dental and vision care benefits are also available for employees and families.
