Position Overview
Upper Savannah Council of Governments is seeking an experienced, dependable, and detail-oriented Accounting Specialist to join our finance team in Greenwood, South Carolina.
This is a hands-on accounting position focused on accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, financial recordkeeping, and financial support for government-funded programs and related organizations.
A degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field is preferred but not required. Candidates with strong practical bookkeeping or accounting experience will receive full consideration.
The Accounting Specialist will work closely with the Finance Director and assist with the daily financial activities of the Council of Governments.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist the Finance Director with daily accounting and financial activities.
- Process accounts payable for general operations and individual programs.
- Process accounts receivable and accurately record incoming payments.
- Enter and maintain financial transactions and supporting records.
- Reconcile bank accounts, general ledger accounts, and other financial records.
- Research and resolve discrepancies in accounting records.
- Maintain organized invoices, receipts, reports, and supporting documentation.
- Assist with month-end and year-end accounting activities.
- Prepare account summaries, schedules, and routine financial reports.
- Track revenues and expenses by program, fund, or account.
- Assist with the financial administration of the Community Development program.
- Maintain financial records for the Upper Savannah Development Corporation.
- Maintain financial records for the Upper Savannah Land Trust.
- Help ensure financial records comply with internal procedures and applicable program requirements.
- Perform other related accounting and administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Practical experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or financial recordkeeping.
- A degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field is preferred but not required.
- At least one year of professional bookkeeping or accounting experience is preferred.
- Experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Experience reconciling bank accounts and other financial accounts.
- Familiarity with general ledger entries, account coding, and financial recordkeeping.
- Ability to enter, review, and organize financial information accurately.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Experience using accounting or bookkeeping software.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of financial information.
- Dependable attendance and a professional work style.
- Ability and willingness to learn new accounting systems, procedures, and program requirements.
Experience with government, nonprofit, grant-funded, or fund accounting is helpful but not required.
Compensation, Schedule, and Benefits
- Salary of $45,000–$55,000 per year, based on relevant experience and qualifications.
- Full-time schedule of 37.5 hours per week.
