Volunteer and make a difference! We are recruiting 8 volunteers to join our team with the Hurricane Helene Rebuild and Recovery efforts in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. This team will be assisting in different construction stages at a few homes from July 12-18.
Background: On September 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall in western North Carolina, bringing historic rainfall and mudslides to the Appalachian region. The resulting floods damaged or destroyed over 100,000 homes. To meet the long-term recovery needs, we are partnering with a local disaster response organizationto assist in the rebuilding of homes for affected families through the help of skilled volunteers.
Duration: This will be a 6-day volunteer project with teams meeting in Spruce Pine, NC on July 12 and departing on July 18. Volunteers must be committed to all 6 days of the build.
Work: A skilled Construction Leader will be on-site to guide and instruct volunteers on the tasks throughout the week. The Spruce Pine Rebuild team has asked for skilled volunteers to complete the following tasks:
- Installing the fascia on a few newly roofed homes
- Building decks and ramps for elderly homeowners who do not yet have access to enter or leave their homes. (Youth groups are visiting this summer and they do not have the skills yet to make the ramps!)
- Installing vinyl siding at 1 home
- Possibly framing a new home (We will know by next week – and if we have enough volunteers!)
Lodging: Accommodation will be provided. The team will be staying at a Volunteer Housing Facility in Spruce Pine, NC.
Flight and Travel: Travel will be covered by International Relief Teams. Flights will be booked to Asheville Regional Airport (AVL). Teams will be carpooling 1-hour to the Volunteer Housing Facility. Rental drivers will be paying for the van rental at the time of pick up and will be reimbursed after the trip. (If you are driving your own vehicle, you will be reimbursed based on your miles or the cost of a flight.)
Meals: The Volunteer Housing Facility will provide breakfast, a sack lunch sandwich, and a hot, fresh dinner on site. Volunteers must bring $100 to cover the fee for the meals for the week. Volunteer Leaders will go shopping for some additional sack lunch items for workdays, so please bring some additional cash to reimburse the team leader for those items.
Tools: The Volunteer facility will have a tools trailer that will be at the build site. They also have a tool room at their facility that has all the necessary tools for framing. You are welcome to bring your personal tools, belts, etc. Specific tools for the project will be shared during the Team Call 1-week before the build.
