Ensures the safe and accurate use of radiation for medical purposes. Collaborates with doctors to design patient treatment plans, rigorously calibrate medical equipment, and manage strict radiation safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Treatment Planning: Develop and optimize customized radiation therapy plans (e.g., for cancer patients) using computer modeling to deliver maximum tumor doses while protecting healthy tissue.
Equipment Calibration & QA: Test, calibrate, and maintain highly complex imaging and radiation devices (like Linear Accelerators, CT, and MRI scanners) to ensure peak accuracy and performance.
Radiation Safety - Designs shielding requirements, monitors radiation exposure levels, and enforces safety protocols for patients, staff and the environment
Dosimetry Calculations - Performs complex calculations to verify radiation dosages before, during and after treatments
Qualifications & Requirements
Education: Requires either a Master's or Ph.D. in Medical Physics or a closely related scientific field.
Certification: Board certification by organizations such as the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP).
