Grace Railroad Contractors is seeking a dependable, safety-focused CDL Class A Driver and Backhoe Equipment Operator to join our railroad construction and maintenance team. This position is responsible for safely transporting equipment, materials, and machinery to and from job sites while operating heavy equipment in support of railroad construction, maintenance, and repair projects. Candidates must be willing to travel, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and maintain a strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Safely operate a CDL Class A commercial vehicle to transport equipment, machinery, and construction materials.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain accurate DOT logs and required documentation.
- Operate backhoes and other heavy equipment for excavation, grading, trenching, ditching, drainage, and railroad maintenance activities.
- Assist with railroad construction, track maintenance, crossing installations, and site preparation.
- Load, unload, secure, and transport heavy equipment in compliance with DOT regulations.
- Perform daily inspections, basic maintenance, and minor repairs on trucks, trailers, and equipment.
- Follow railroad safety rules, company policies, and OSHA regulations at all times.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, crew members, and customers.
- Assist other crew members with manual labor as needed.
- Maintain a clean and organized work vehicle and equipment.
- Respond to emergency or after-hours work when required.
- Travel to project locations as assigned.
Qualifications
- Valid CDL Class A driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Experience operating backhoes and heavy construction equipment.
- Knowledge of safe excavation practices and underground utility awareness.
- Ability to safely load and transport heavy equipment.
- Previous railroad construction or heavy civil construction experience preferred.
- Ability to read and understand work orders, maps, and safety procedures.
- Strong work ethic with excellent attendance and reliability.
- Mechanical aptitude is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Frequently climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and work on uneven terrain.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and travel when project demands require.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical examination, and background check.
Preferred Certifications
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Railroad Safety Training (preferred but not required)
