Senior Mechanical Engineer (HVAC)
Location: Hybrid in Englewood, CO
Salary: $120-155k base plus bonus
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in commercial HVAC design and building systems to lead mechanical engineering projects from concept through construction. The role focuses on designing, retrofitting, and coordinating HVAC and piping systems, producing accurate mechanical layouts and drawings, and ensuring code-compliant, energy-efficient solutions for commercial facilities. The ideal candidate will combine technical leadership, hands-on mechanical aptitude, and proficiency in CAD and BIM tools to deliver high-quality engineering deliverables and mentor junior staff.
Key Responsibilities

Lead mechanical engineering design for commercial HVAC and associated building systems, including load calculations, equipment selection, ductwork and piping design, and layout development.

Develop detailed mechanical drawings and construction documents using AutoCAD and Revit, ensuring clear coordination with architectural and other engineering disciplines.

Plan and execute HVAC retrofit projects: assess existing systems, propose viable upgrade options, estimate costs, and produce implementation drawings.

Create and review piping diagrams, ductwork layouts, and coordination drawings, resolving clashes and ensuring constructability.

Perform code review and ensure designs comply with applicable standards (e.g., ASHRAE, IMC, local building codes) and energy efficiency requirements.

Provide project leadership including preparing scopes, schedules, and technical deliverables, tracking project milestones, and coordinating with clients, contractors, and internal teams.

Conduct site visits and field inspections to verify conditions, support commissioning activities, and address construction issues in the field.

Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers, provide technical review of calculations and drawings, and contribute to staff development.

Participate in client meetings and presentations, prepare technical reports and proposals, and support business development efforts as needed.

Implement QA/QC procedures for mechanical design deliverables, and maintain accurate project documentation and as-built records.
Qualifications

5+ years of progressive mechanical engineering focusing on commercial HVAC design and retrofit projects.

Proven experience with HVAC systems, equipment selection, ductwork and piping design, and layout development.

Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit for producing construction documents and BIM coordination; experience with CAD standards and drafting best practices.

Experience with HVAC load calculations, energy analysis, and familiarity with ASHRAE standards, IMC, and local codes.

Hands-on mechanical aptitude and practical understanding of installation and construction processes.

Previous experience producing retrofit designs and field investigation reports.
