Position: Foreman/Project Manager
Organization: Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum
Bellefontaine (www.bellefontainecemetery.org) is a 314-acre historic, non-profit cemetery. Founded in 1849 and considered one of the premier historic cemeteries in the United States, the cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is well known for its rich history and architecture, and engages the public through tours, lectures and events. Bellefontaine is also a Level III arboretum with large specimen tree collections, added to annually. Dozens of annual, perennial and native gardens are spread throughout the cemetery.
Work Location: This is an onsite position. Remote work is not available, as regular on-site presence is required to meet the operational needs of the cemetery.
Position Responsibilities:
Management of Burial Operations
- Reports to the President & CEO and General Manager
- Works in tandem with another Foreman with a focus on Project Management
- The Project Manager is responsible for development and overseeing projects as approved/defined by the President to ensure they are completed in a timely fashion and within budget. Projects will include but are not limited to building renovations, tomb repairs, road repairs, etc.
- The Project Manager will plan and designate project resources, prepare budgets, monitor progress, and keep stakeholders informed throughout the entire project.
- Direct supervision of Grounds Crew and duties of the Grounds Crew. Will work with the Foreman to manage Union/Grounds Crew staff
- Supervision of contracted employees when those employees are performing work pertaining to cemetery grounds. This includes regular communication with foreman, and subsequent communication of all relevant information with the Cemetery President
- Coordinates burial operations with the other Foreman. This includes interments, section and lot layout and control, and management of burial sites
-Works alongside Foreman to line up vehicles for funeral processions and lead them to the gravesite.
Must be comfortable and able to communicate and instruct guests during services, events, etc.
- Coordinate details of interments, entombments, and inurnments with Customer Relations Staff
-Coordinate details, oversee set-up, and work events for Development Staff
- Procures/orders tools, supplies and equipment while adhering to the annual Grounds budget
- Layout of burial spaces according to need
- Works with President to engage contractors, and conducts contract bidding
- Monitors outside contractors engaged in tree removal, grass care, snow removal, lakes and stream management, etc.
- Act as the Union liaison, alongside the President, during Union contract, benefits, and wages negotiations
- Manages upkeep and maintenance of roads, buildings, fences, plumbing, electric, equipment, and monuments
- Oversees inventory of physical assets, including tools, supplies, etc.
- Will update and maintain Safety Data Sheets
- Ensure Grounds Crew and operations are compliant with OSHA standards
- Works with President and Finance staff to set budget goals for the year and manage to budget quarterly

Management of Horticulture Operations
- Works closely with Horticulture staff to manage all aspects of the landscape of the cemetery grounds
- Assists the Horticulture Department by overseeing the daily operations of the Horticulture Crew alongside the Horticulture Supervisor
- Oversees garden design planning, budgeting, and upkeep of gardens and plantings throughout the cemetery, as well as tree care
- Tracks Horticulture Crew hours and ensures appropriate staffing levels
- Works alongside the Director of Horticulture to ensure all horticultural operations align with Bellefontaine's vision and Level III Arboretum accreditation
- Ensures the grounds and gardens consistently look their best, and that all horticultural operations align with the direction of the General Manager, President, and Board of Directors
Skills and Experience:
- A minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience; cemetery grounds familiarity a plus
- Strong computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to perform outdoor, physically demanding tasks, often lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to perform and manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Strong communication skills, ability to represent Bellefontaine Cemetery & Arboretum in a professional manner in both written and oral communication
- Strong organizational and management skills
- Skilled in promoting teamwork
- Use of gas-powered equipment including but not limited to line trimmer, auger, sod cutter, leaf blower, chainsaw, and pole pruner
- Operate front-end loaders and tractor, as well as associated attachments
- Must be able to work with the utmost consideration for health and safety of both the Grounds Crew and any employee/volunteer that may be working under her/his supervision
- Working knowledge of horticultural and landscape management practices, including plant care, garden design, and tree care, a plus
Education:
- Associate’s degree (minimum) in construction, project management, horticulture, or a related field required.
Experience:
- Microsoft Office: 3 years (Required)
- Supervising: 3 years (Required)
- Databases: 1 year (Preferred)
Requirements:
· Must hold a valid driver's license
· Must provide a professional appearance and manner to both internal and external constituents
·Ability to compose e-mails to communicate professionally with Bellefontaine staff, families, vendors, and other outside organizations
Work Schedule:
- This position currently works every other Saturday and some evenings.
Physical Demands:
· Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted
- Requires walking, bending, standing, reaching, and other physical activities for extended periods of time
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
Must undergo and pass a physical, including a lift test, and background check before employment
