Summary
Under the supervisin f the Directr f Special Educatin, the speech and language (S/L) therapist will identify and treat cmmunicatin prblems related t language and speech. Wrking with students f all ages, schl age t 21 years, S/L therapist seeks t imprve cmmunicatin skills thrugh ral exercises and language therapies. The eligible student may have an articulatin, language, fluency, r vice disrder, which prevents them frm either being understd r understanding thers. The S/L therapist will assist in the selectin f apprpriate alternative augmentative cmmunicatin devices and systems when apprpriate. The S/L therapist will wrk within a team structure t facilitate the schl based access prgram (SBAP) billable services. The S/L therapist will prvide bth direct and indirect services as described belw.
Essential Duties, Respnsibilities and Cmpetencies:
The S/L therapist cmmunicates and cllabrates with staff, parents, cmmunity and advcates n issues pertaining t services fr students with disabilities (e.g., LCTI,
- VR, MH/MR, CLIU).
The S/L therapist prvides guidance, supprt and direct services t address cmpliance issues related t the placement f newly identified and cmparable pr- gram placement eligible students.
The S/L therapist wrks directly with a full spectrum f eligible students; mild t severe disrders. Eligibility includes: students with speech and language as a primary disability r students with autism, deaf-blindness, deafness r hard f hearing, emtinal disturbance, mental retardatin, multiple disabilities, rthpedic impairment, - ther health impairment, specific learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury and visual impairment including blindness as a related services.
The S/L therapist will emply pre-referral strategies t determine if the student may need further evaluatin thrugh the multi-disciplinary evaluatin (MDE) pr- cess.
The S/L therapist will cnsult with the general and special educatin teachers t fster cllabrative supprt and transfer f skills and knwledge related t specific strategies t supp- rt the student.
The S/L therapist will cmmunicate with parents and prvide them with required dcumentatin and strategies t supprt their student and t extend their therapy interventi- n.
The S/L therapist will prvide data t the special educatin teachers fr RR, IEP develpment, and prgress mnit- ring.
The S/L therapist will participates in scheduled IEP meetings unless a signed waiver nt t participate in the IEP meeting has been apprved and btained fr- m the parent.
The S/L therapist will maintain prgress mnitring infrmatin n all annual gals related t S/L and prvide updated prgress mnitring infrmatin at least n a quarterly basis t- the parent.
The S/L therapist will develp and revise as necessary an efficient therapy schedule which prvides direct instructin as described - n the IEP.
The S/L therapist will participate in ther required meetings if apprpriate: e.g., parent cnferences, extended schl year determinatin, manifestatin determinatin, assistive device planning, IEP, ER, RR r any ther related meetings in which the S/L therapist wuld pr- vide valuable input.
When eligible, the S/L therapist will cmplete Medicaid billing schl based access prgram (SBAP) paperw- rk.
The S/L therapist will participate in the transitin assessment prcess fr students transitining frm early interventi- n services.
The S/L therapist will remain current in the field by participating in appr- ved training.
The S/L therapist will prmte a Cnsultative Mdel and Team Apprach by prviding cllegial supprt; specifically sharing knwledge and skills, with general and special educatin teachers, nvice S/L therapists - r emergency certified S/L therapists.
The S/L therapist is knwledgeable f evaluatin assessment prcedures fr diagnsis f speech and language dis- rders.
The S/L therapist is knwledgeable f research-based strategies t supprt specific speech and language dis- rders.
The S/L therapist is knwledgeable f exiting determinatin pr- cedures.
The S/L therapist will prmte least restrictive envirnment (LRE) pprtunities by ffering therapy in an Integrative Mdel apprach; e.g., supprt within the cmmunity-based instructin frmat, within special educatin classrm, r within general educatin settings when appr- priate.
The S/L therapist will develp, prgram, and/r maintain augmentative cmmunicati- n systems/materials and therapeutic strategies.
The S/L therapist will cllabrate with agencies (e.g., CLIU) t determine apprpriate supprt and specialized needs f- r qualifying students.
The S/L therapist will cnsult with clleague therapy team t review case study cncerns and - ffer guidance.
