Job Summary
School Bus Monitor/aides work on a school bus to provide safe transportation to all students. Bus monitors/aides duties include but not limited to helping children on and off the bus, supervise them during transport, and transfer them to the correct parent or guardian, safe operation of a wheelchair lift, and securing any and all restrains devises. Bus monitor/aide are specially trained for the safe transportation for special needs students.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The ability to supervise students while being transported to and from school and school activities.
- Communicate bus rules/safety and behavior requirements to students and address improper behavior immediately while using appropriate communication skills.
- Assist the bus driver and school personnel with loading/unloading students at each stop and pick up location.
- Enforce safety rules and provide direction to students.
- Maintain disciple on the bus in accordance with recommendations of the administrations.
- When transporting wheelchairs, ensure that wheelchairs are properly fasten.
- Ensure that all students are secure and when appropriate, secure restraining devices, i.e., seatbelts, harnesses, and toddler seats.
- Move throughout the bus when it is safe to always allow for observation and assistance to all students.
- Be familiar with all aspects of their assigned bus route i.e., student IEP plans, route stops, student needs.
- Ability to operate wheelchair lift equipment and special equipment used in transporting special education students.
- Be willing to work with all bus driver and all students. Although assigned to one route, bus monitors may be expected to help else ware.
- Required to attend safety meetings and participate in training.
- Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and assisting students.
- Document student behavior while maintain confidentiality.
Experience and Skill Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
o Some experience working with special education students preferred.
