Lavelle School located in the Northeast Bronx, a multicultural education facility which addresses the academic, vocational and social needs of students who are blind and have multiple disabilities, is seeking a Physical Therapist to fill an immediate opening.
Position Details:
Reports to PPS Coordinator
Qualifications and Personal Characteristics:
New York State License as a Physical Therapist
Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy Program
Experience working in a school/pediatric setting with students with special needs including students with blindness/visual impairment and multiple disabilities
Maintains confidentiality in regards to student and staff records.
Displays flexibility, patience, good judgement, and dependability
Responds appropriately in crisis situations
Follows all employment guidelines and policie
Responsibilities include:
Recommend and/or prescribe appropriate therapeutic exercises or activities to address soft tissue, joint and tone abnormalities and to improve or increase functional or independent mobility
Assesse and recommend adaptive mobility and/or positioning equipment and orthotics to improve posture, function, and mobility and to prevent deformities
Administer and advise teaching staff on M.O.V.E. Program (Mobility Opportunities via Education)
Structure intervention to meet goals and objectives on student’s IEP
Organize and keep records related to student attendance, student progress, and Medicaid/IDEA mandated documentation
Perform evaluations (initial, annual, triennial) to determine students’ impairments, functional limitations and restrictions and makes recommendations for goals and mandates as appropriate, attending IEP meetings as warranted.
Work as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team and provides consultation to classroom staff and other related service providers, facilitating an integrated therapy approach
Modify therapy materials as necessary to work with blind/visually impaired, multiply impaired, and sensory impaired students
Collaborate with orthotists and adaptive equipment specialists to meet needs of students
Work as part of the educational team to implement IEP goals, behavior intervention programs, curriculum development, parent relations
Participate in regular team and departmental meetings, supervisory meetings, school and instructional meetings and staff development days as required
Provide parent consultation on an ongoing basis in regard to evaluative findings, recommended mandates, carryover of therapeutic practices into the home, access to resources and other parent-focused activities
