OPHTHALMIC PHOTOGRAPHER

About the Position: An Ophthalmic Photographer uses specialized imaging equipment to capture detailed
photographs of the eye, aiding ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders. This role involves
operating cameras, microscopes, and slit lamps and performing procedures like angiography, tomography, and micrography.
Required Education and Experience:
1. High school diploma or equivalent; At least 1 year of ophthalmic experience is preferred.
2. Previous experience in ophthalmic photography or medical photography is highly desirable
3. Certification from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) is preferred

- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
- Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT)
4. Our clinic will support this position in pursuing additional certifications related to ophthalmic photography to
5. provide the highest level of imaging and support to our physicians
- Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA)
- Optical Coherence Tomography Certification (OCT-C)
- Registered Ophthalmic Ultrasound Biometrist (ROUB) certification
Essential Skills and Abilities:
1. Proficiency in techniques like fluorescein angiography, fundus photography, and Optical Coherence
Tomography (OCT)
2. Ability to perform and interpret diagnostic tests such as visual field testing and anterior segment imaging
3. Skilled in using and maintaining specialized ophthalmic imaging equipment
4. Communicate effectively with patients and medical staff, explain procedures clearly, and ensure patient comfort
5. Provide empathetic and compassionate care, especially in high-stress environments
6. High level of attention to detail to ensure accurate and high-quality images
7. Ability to handle patient interactions professionally, including taking patient histories and administering eye drops
8. Capability to work well under pressure in fast-paced medical settings
9. Working effectively as part of a healthcare team, collaborating with ophthalmologists and other medical professionals
10. Ability to work in an EHR (Electronic Health Records) environment and transfer digital images within computer systems
Key Responsibilities:
1. Use advanced imaging equipment to photograph the retina, cornea, and other parts of the eye as ordered by the ophthalmologist
2. Perform diagnostic tests such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography
3. Obtain informed consent forms as they apply to angiographies
4. Prepare patients for imaging procedures, explain the process, and ensure comfort
5. Process and analyze images to ensure clarity and accuracy for diagnostic purposes
6. Maintain and calibrate imaging equipment to ensure optimal performance
7. Work with IT to ensure the digital database of patient images is backed up regularly
8. Record and document imaging procedures and results in patient records
9. Work closely with ophthalmologists and other medical staff to provide comprehensive patient care
10. Maintain camera(s), related equipment, and supplies inventory
11. Maintain all patient-related records as they pertain to imaging systems
12. Maintain records of work performed
13. Obtain images for physician presentations, as necessary
14. Performs other duties as assigned
Physical Activity of Position:
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking between different imaging equipment and patient areas
- Fine motor skills to operate delicate imaging equipment and perform precise adjustments
- Excellent vision for capturing high-quality images and interpreting diagnostic results
- Occasionally lifting and carrying equipment or assisting patients, which may involve weights up to 25 pounds
- Regular interaction with patients requires good communication skills and the ability to provide compassionate care
- Work environment includes hospitals, clinics, or specialized eye care centers, which may involve exposure to infectious diseases and the need for strict hygiene practices. It typically involves working in a small space like a dimly lit or dark room.
