As a Millwright, you are responsible for ensuring mill equipment runs safely, reliably, and efficiently. Your day-to-day work includes:
Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
- Perform preventative maintenance to reduce downtime and extend equipment life
- Maintain, install, repair, improve, and troubleshoot mill machinery including conveyor systems, saws, kilns, and de-barkers
- Diagnose machine performance issues and implement corrective solutions
Technical Expertise:
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprints
- Perform welding and fabrication to repair and modify equipment components
- Maintain and troubleshoot hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Work alongside electricians on electrical systems and components
- Evaluate and test equipment efficiency, recommending improvements
Documentation & Communication:
- Maintain accurate maintenance documentation, parts inventory, and closing reports
- Proactively communicate with all departments to ensure proper operation of equipment
- Regularly educate maintenance and operations teams on evolving programs
Continuous Improvement:
- Continuously evaluate and analyze quality, safety, and production processes
- Identify and suggest new approaches or best practices to drive improvement
- Partner with machine operators to improve efficiency and reliability
- Implement and maintain preventative maintenance programs
Safety & Compliance:
- Follow and model strict safety protocols and regulatory compliance standards
- Make safety in the workplace the number one priority
- Work cross-functionally with production and leadership teams to keep the mill operating safely
This is hands-on, technical work in a fast-paced industrial setting where your expertise directly drives uptime, safety, and mill performance.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of industrial equipment maintenance experience
- Sawmill operations experience preferred
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in mechanical systems: conveyor systems, saws, kilns, de-barkers
- Skilled in welding and fabrication for equipment repair and modification
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprints
- Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems maintenance and troubleshooting
- Basic understanding of electrical systems and electrical safety practices
- Strong problem-solving skills to diagnose mechanical issues quickly and accurately
Work Style & Competencies:
- Team player with excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Highly self-motivated and able to work independently
- Collaborative approach with willingness to mentor less experienced millwrights
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Flexibility to work non-standard hours or weekends when urgent needs arise
- Strict adherence to safety protocols and procedures
Other Requirements:
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs., climb stairs and ladders, and move equipment as needed
Lift up to 50+ lbs., climb stairs and ladders, and work around industrial equipment
- Work safely around moving mechanical systems
- Comfortable in loud conditions with airborne sawdust
- Comfortable working in indoor and outdoor temperatures
- Flexibility to work non-standard hours or weekends when urgent maintenance needs arise
