Lead CNC Programmer – Multi-Axis CNC
Position Summary
The CNC Programmer is responsible for programming, setup, and machining of complex composite and metal components utilizing multi-axis CNC equipment. This role requires advanced expertise in 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining and full-cycle NC programming in Mastercam, including creating programs from scratch rather than simply editing existing files.
The ideal candidate will possess strong hands-on machining experience combined with advanced CAM programming capabilities supporting precision aerospace and high-tolerance manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop complete CNC programs from scratch in Mastercam for complex 3-axis and 5-axis milling applications
- Generate and optimize multi-axis tool paths, machining strategies, and post-processing outputs
- Program, set up, and machine precision composite and metal components to tight tolerances
- Perform complex machine setups, prove-outs, and first article validations
- Operate and support a variety of CNC milling and turning equipment
- Analyze part geometry, tooling requirements, fixturing, and machining processes to improve cycle times and part quality
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling, programming, and process-related issues
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to machining efficiency, tooling optimization, and process capability
- Coordinate corrective actions to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules
- Verify program accuracy using simulations, setup sheets, tooling documentation, and machine prove-outs
- Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, engineering, quality, and production teams
Required Qualifications
- Advanced experience with 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining environments
- Strong Mastercam programming experience with the ability to create CNC programs from scratch
- Experience programming complex multi-axis milling operations, not limited to editing existing programs
- Hands-on setup and operation experience with CNC mills and/or lathes
- Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, GD&T, engineering drawings, and manufacturing procedures
- Strong understanding of machining composites and/or metal materials
- Advanced knowledge of tooling, feeds/speeds, work holding, and machining strategies
- Ability to troubleshoot programming, machine, and tooling issues independently
- Proficient with precision measuring instruments and inspection methods
- Strong math and trigonometry skills related to CNC programming and machining
- Familiarity with NC equipment, post-processors, and CAD/CAM systems
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills in a production environment
Preferred Experience
- Aerospace or high-precision manufacturing experience
- Experience with multi-axis lathe and mill-turn programming
- Experience supporting low-volume/high-mix manufacturing environments
- Background machining complex composite structures and assemblies
- Experience with first article inspection and process validation
