Position Overview:
We are seeking creative, innovative, and passionate Maker space Instructors to join our educational team working as a K-5th Grade Design Lab/Maker space instructor at an elementary school in Laurel Canyon. As a Maker space Instructor, you will be assigned to a specific site and play a pivotal role in delivering an engaging, dynamic, and meaningful maker experience to our students.
You will utilize our dynamic curriculum, which is aligned with ISTE, NGSS, and California Content Standards. Your primary responsibility will be to execute the lessons with flexibility and creativity, encouraging student exploration and problem-solving within the context of the engineering and design process.
Position begins Aug 10, 2026. Candidate must be available Tuesdays-Thursdays, 7:30am-12pm for the duration of the school year.
Key Responsibilities:
1.Maker Experience Facilitation:
- Implement our makerspace curriculum, fostering creativity and critical thinking in students.
- Execute lessons with adaptability, tailoring the learning experience to suit students' interests, abilities, and learning styles.
2. Inclusive Learning Environment:
- Create an inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity of backgrounds, cultures, and abilities, ensuring all students feel valued and respected.
- Foster a collaborative atmosphere where students from different backgrounds work together, learning from each other's perspectives.
3. Engineering and Design Process:
- Guide students through the engineering and design process, encouraging iterative problem-solving and innovation in their maker projects.
- Emphasize the importance of prototyping, testing, and refining ideas to promote a process-oriented mindset.
4. Social Emotional Learning (SEL):
- Incorporate social emotional learning principles into the makerspace experience, nurturing students' emotional intelligence, resilience, and interpersonal skills.
- Encourage students to embrace a growth mindset, fostering a positive attitude towards challenges and mistakes as opportunities for learning and improvement.
5. Tools and Equipment Management:
- Manage and maintain the maker space, ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are safe, accessible, and well-organized for student use.
- Provide guidance on the proper and safe use of various tools and technologies, promoting a culture of safety and responsibility.
6. Project-Based Learning:
- Facilitate and support hands-on, project-based learning experiences that inspire curiosity and creativity among students.
- Empower students to take ownership of their projects, providing guidance and support throughout the creative process.
7. Collaboration and Community Engagement:
- Collaborate with other educators and subject-area teachers to integrate maker space projects into the broader curriculum.
- Engage with the local community to foster partnerships and involve external experts, mentors, or resources in maker space initiatives.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, STEAM-related field, the arts, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience in education, project-based learning, or a related field is preferred.
- Proficiency in using a wide range of tools and technologies commonly found in maker spaces, such as 2D and 3D design, electronics, coding platforms, etc.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage and inspire students.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities to manage multiple projects and student groups simultaneously.
- Passion for promoting creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in students.
- A growth mindset, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace new teaching methodologies.
- High social emotional intelligence to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.
