At Camp JCA Shalom, our mission is to provide a positive, safe, and fun Jewish camping experience that fosters personal and social growth, skills development, and an appreciation for nature. We are committed to promoting strong Jewish values of community, tradition, and service. Most importantly, we strive to create an environment that is not only fun for our campers and staff, but also full of spirit and life. Camp JCA Shalom is made up of campers from a variety of different Jewish backgrounds, as well as non-Jewish and other backgrounds, primarily from across Southern California. Camp JCA Shalom offers two week sessions for children entering grades 2-8, a three-week session for children entering grades 5-8, special one-week mini-camps for children entering grades 2-6, and a variety of programs for teens entering grades 9-12.
JOB DESCRIPTION: GENERAL COUNSELOR
Minimum Qualifications
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
- Ability to relate to one's peer group
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance
- Ability to assist in teaching an activity
- Good character, integrity, and adaptability
- Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
- High school graduate or equivalent, or at least 18 years of age

General Responsibility
- To identify and meet camper needs.
General Responsibilities
- To carry out camp programs.
Specific Responsibilities
- Care for each camper
- Guide cabin or unit groups and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities
- Make sure that campers are safe and that needs are being met at all times
- Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety regulations
- Engage campers at all times
- Report any and all high-risk behaviors up the chain of command
- Make campers feel safe and loved
- Instruct campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuating the cabin, etc.
- Help campers engage in unit-wide or camp-wide programs, special events, and activities
- Make sure that campers take prescribed medications from nurse staff at appropriate times
- Assist in teaching or leading an activity, as assigned
- Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp.
- Address any cabin issues in a timely manner
- Place the needs of the campers and the camp above their own
