Part-Time Choir Director Job Description
Position Overview
Yuma Lutheran School seeks a part-time Choir Director to develop and lead a Christ-centered choral program for students, fostering musical excellence, teamwork, and joyful participation in worship and school life. The Choir Director plans and directs rehearsals and performances for one or more student choirs and collaborates closely with school administration and chapel planners to support the school’s mission.

- Schedule: Part-time; during & after-school rehearsals and selected school-day or evening performances, with exact schedule to be determined.
- FLSA Status: Exempt, part-time.
Mission Alignment
- Support and uphold the Christian mission and values of Yuma Lutheran School, reflecting Lutheran theology and practice in worship music and interactions with students.
- Select and present music that is Christ-centered, doctrinally sound, age-appropriate, and supportive of the themes and scripture used in school chapel and special services.
Primary Responsibilities
- Direct and manage the school’s choral program for assigned grade levels, providing high-quality choral instruction.
- Plan, prepare, and lead regular rehearsals that develop healthy vocal technique, ensemble skills, and musical literacy in students.
- Select a balanced repertoire appropriate to students’ abilities and the liturgical or church-year calendar.
- Prepare students for performances at chapel services, school concerts, special programs such as Christmas, Easter, and occasional community events as approved.
- Teach and reinforce basic music-reading skills, rhythm, pitch, diction, and part-singing as appropriate to grade level.
- Collaborate with the principal, pastors, and chapel planners to coordinate musical offerings with themes, scripture readings, and school-wide events.
- Communicate rehearsal and performance expectations clearly to students and families, including schedules, attire, and behavior standards.
- Maintain a positive, orderly, and encouraging rehearsal environment, using effective classroom management consistent with school policies.
- Coordinate with accompanists and other musicians as needed; provide music well in advance and schedule run-throughs before key performances.
- Care for and organize choral music and related materials, keeping the music library, storage, and rehearsal spaces neat and orderly.
Additional Duties
- Assist with music for occasional all-school worship services or special events as requested, such as National Lutheran Schools Week.
- Encourage student leadership and support individual students preparing for solos or special services when possible.
- Participate in selected staff meetings or professional development sessions when they directly relate to the music or worship program, as scheduled by the administration.
- Uphold all school policies and contribute to a safe, respectful, and Christ-centered school climate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field preferred; significant choral directing or vocal performance experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Demonstrated skill in directing choirs, teaching vocal technique, and rehearsing school-age singers in a group setting.
- Understanding of sacred or church music and its role in Christian worship; experience in a Lutheran or similar liturgical tradition preferred.
- Ability to select age-appropriate, theologically sound choral repertoire and align it with worship themes and the church year.
- Strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, staff, and pastor.
- Proficiency at the piano or another accompanying instrument is preferred but not required; the school may provide an accompanist.
- Active Christian faith and willingness to model Christian character, lead students in prayer as appropriate, and support the spiritual life of the school.
Work Hours and Physical Requirements
- Weekly after-school rehearsals during the school year, along with additional rehearsals as needed prior to major performances.
- Participation in scheduled school-day and occasional evening events, including concerts, worship services, and programs, as determined by the school calendar.
- Ability to stand for rehearsals and performances, move within classroom and performance spaces, and occasionally lift or move music equipment, risers, and supplies.
