JOB OVERVIEW: The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) provides direct peer-to-peer support services to individuals who have substance abuse or co-occurring disorders. As an advocate for patients, the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist will be responsible for providing essential expertise and consultation to the entire multidisciplinary treatment team to promote a culture in which each individual's treatment needs and preferences are recognized, understood, respected and integrated into treatment, rehabilitation, and community self-help activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists individuals in developing problem-solving skills to respond to challenging experiences in their recovery.
- Models effective coping and self-help strategies and techniques to individuals or groups of patients to overcome personal fears, anxieties, urges, and triggers.
- Assists/supports individuals in daily decision making, resolution of minor problems, and crisis intervention as necessary.
- Assists individuals in identifying their personal goals and objectives for recovery and sobriety.
- Assists other staff in a collaborative process of identifying programs and environments that are conducive to recovery.
- Assists individuals in creating their personal recovery plans.
- Meets with individuals to provide advice and support in accordance with treatment plans.
- Facilitates peer support groups and recovery-oriented activities.
- Maintains confidentiality and ethical standards in all interactions.
- Participates in continuous training and supervision to enhance professional development.
- Documents individuals' progress and outcomes to support ongoing care planning.
- Assists individuals in obtaining and utilizing clinic-based and community-based services that support individual recovery needs.
- Assists individuals by identifying community resources and encouraging participation to engage in healthy social activities, employment opportunities, or provide other assistance as needed.
- Observes behaviors and evidence of general well-being and discusses observations with the inmates.
- Assists individuals in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Certification
- Completion of the online Missouri Credentialing Board Certified Peer Support Specialist Exam and must complete annual continuing education to maintain certification during employment.
- Experience
- 2 years of experience working with Adult MH/SA disorders, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in corrections medicine, emergency department, or psychiatric facility setting is desired; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

- Requires passing a criminal background check and Department of Social Services/Child Protective Services background check.
- Ability to complete a State-approved training program and pass a standardized examination.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able to multitask, prioritize, be dependable and reliable.
- Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
