Position Summary
The on-call Program Leader role does not follow a regular schedule and provides support as needed. The On-Call Program Leader delivers engaging and meaningful activities for youth within YMCA programs at branches, elementary schools, and middle schools. Working under the guidance of Program Site Coordinators and Directors, this position steps in to assist with program operations when coverage is required. The ideal candidate is adaptable, dependable, proactive, and committed to creating a positive experience for youth while supporting overall team objectives
After School Program Dates
- San Francisco Sites: August 10, 2026 – June 2, 2027
- Marin Sites: August 17, 2026 – June 11, 2027
Job Responsibilities
Program Support

Assist with the delivery of engaging, inclusive, and theme-based activities that align with the developmental and cultural needs of youth when scheduled to work.

Facilitate academic enrichment, tutoring, and structured recreational activities as assigned.
- Collaborate with site staff, parents, and participants to support planned program activities during assigned shifts
Supervision & Safety

Provide supervision and support for groups of up to 20 students, ensuring adherence to YMCA safety and child protection protocols while on duty.
- Monitor participant behavior, respond promptly to incidents, and enforce safety guidelines
Administrative Duties

Complete required documentation during shifts, including attendance tracking, emergency information, and incident or safety log
Communication & Collaboration

Maintain respectful, professional communication with participants, families, staff, and volunteers while representing the program.
Training & Development
- Complete required safety and program training before the first shift and attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications
-
Age: 18+ for elementary programs; 21+ for middle school programs.
- Education: Associate’s degree or higher, or High School diploma/equivalent with one of the following:
o 48+ completed college units (verified by transcript),
o Passing score on the CA Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST), OR
o Passing score on a District Instructional Aide Exam.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Knowledge of youth development principles.
- Availability: Monday–Friday during program hours (~7:00–10:00 am).
- TB Test clearance within the last 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in child development or related field OR equivalent professional and community experience.
- Experience working with elementary or middle school-aged youth.
- Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages.
- Knowledge of arts, dance, drama, sports, or other enrichment areas.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
The On-Call After School Program Leader works in a dynamic environment at local elementary or middle school sites, including indoor classrooms and outdoor schoolyards. The role involves frequent standing, walking, and active participation in physical activities such as recreational sports and games. The environment can be fast-paced and loud, and the role may require occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds. The on-call position will be scheduled on an as needed basis and will not have regularly scheduled hours or shifts.

Salary Description
The On-Call Program Leader position offers a compensation range of $24.00 – $25.50 per hour. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with grant fund approvals and requirements for the position.
