Experienced Heavy Industrial CNC Machinist
Location: North Charleston, SC
Schedule: Full-Time (Day and Night Shifts Available)
Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour, depending on experience
Position Overview
A well-established heavy industrial manufacturing and machining facility is seeking experienced CNC Machinists to join its team. This role is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC and manual machining equipment used in the fabrication, repair, modification, and restoration of large industrial components and machinery. The ideal candidate will possess strong machining skills, experience working with large parts, and the ability to consistently produce high-quality work within tight tolerances.
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens. Access to Department of Defense facilities is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC and manual machining equipment to produce precision components.
- Utilize lathes, milling machines, drill presses, hydraulic presses, band saws, and related machining equipment.
- Fabricate, modify, and repair metal components, machine parts, and tooling.
- Safely install, align, secure, and remove workholding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, and materials.
- Select and utilize appropriate inserts, fixtures, tooling, and machining methods for each job.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and work instructions.
- Determine the proper tools, setups, and machining processes required for assigned tasks.
- Operate cranes, lifting equipment, and material handling devices as needed.
- Inspect finished work using precision measuring instruments to verify dimensional accuracy and tolerance requirements.
- Track jobs and parts through production documentation and traveler systems.
- Perform routine machine cleaning, maintenance, and housekeeping tasks.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following established safety policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with production personnel and team members to ensure efficient workflow.
- Work overtime, evenings, and weekends when required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Preferred Skills & ExperienceEquipment Experience
Candidates with experience operating the following equipment are strongly preferred:
- Heavy industrial lathes
- Grinders
- Boring mills
- Planers
- Portable machining tools
Machining Processes
Experience with the following machining operations is highly desirable:
- Turning
- Drilling
- Tapping
- Boring
- Honing
- Polishing
- Threading
Additional preferred qualifications include:
- Large-part machining experience, including marine, shipyard, power generation, or other heavy industrial applications.
- Experience machining components such as shafts, steering systems, and other oversized equipment.
- Forklift certification or operating experience.
- Overhead crane experience.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Preferred 5 to 10 years of CNC machining experience in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Experience maintaining tolerances as close as .001 inch.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments.
- Familiarity with CNC controls including:
- Fanuc
- Mazatrol
- Okuma
- DMG Mori
- Heidenhain
- Basic understanding of G-Code and M-Code programming and machine movement.
- Experience setting up and operating vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers and CNC turning centers.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to analyze information, troubleshoot issues, and develop practical solutions.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Willingness to learn new equipment, processes, and technologies.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds when required.
- Ability to safely move materials using overhead cranes and lifting devices.
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, and reaching overhead.
- Ability to work around large industrial equipment and machinery.
- Strong visual acuity for inspections, measurements, and precision machining tasks.
- Ability to perform computer-based work as needed.
Work Environment
This position operates in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment with moderate to high noise levels. Employees are expected to comply with all safety regulations and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
