Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Dirt Superintendent to lead earthwork operations for commercial, industrial, municipal, and heavy civil construction projects throughout Indiana. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of site grading, mass excavation, production management, GPS machine control operations, equipment utilization, and field personnel.
The ideal candidate is a proven leader with extensive experience managing large-scale earthmoving operations, finish grading, and GPS-equipped equipment while maintaining a strong focus on safety, productivity, quality, and profitability.
Responsibilities
- Manage daily earthwork, grading, and excavation operations.
- Lead and supervise foremen, operators, laborers, truck drivers, and subcontractors.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and scheduling to meet project deadlines.
- Oversee GPS machine control systems including Trimble and/or Topcon.
- Review grading plans, models, specifications, and survey information.
- Verify rough grades and finish grades meet project requirements and tolerances.
- Monitor production quantities and equipment utilization.
- Identify and resolve field issues before they impact schedule or productivity.
- Coordinate closely with project managers, survey crews, owners, engineers, and inspectors.
- Conduct safety meetings and enforce company safety policies.
- Manage equipment maintenance needs and daily inspections.
- Maintain project quality standards and documentation.
- Assist in planning operations, sequencing work, and forecasting labor and equipment requirements.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in earthwork, excavation, site development, or heavy civil construction.
- Previous experience as a Superintendent, General Foreman, or Lead Foreman preferred.
- Strong understanding of GPS machine control technology.
- Experience with mass grading, finish grading, site balancing, and production earthmoving.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and grading models.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
