Smith EMS keeps athletes safe at events across 60+ athletic programs and 7,500+ games covered. Now we're building something new: a virtual athlete care platform that supports athletes after the whistle blows, through post-injury rehab guidance, return-to-play support, and connection to the right specialists.
We're hiring our first Athletic Trainer to help launch it. This is a ground-floor role for an AT who wants clinical work and a hand in building a program, not just another caseload.
What you'll do
You'll be the clinical heart of our virtual care platform, working with athletes on post-injury rehab, recovery, and care coordination. You'll set your own appointment hours and connect athletes to trusted physicians and specialists across the Twin Cities.
Beyond athlete care, you'll help shape the program itself. Reporting to our Director of Development, you'll bring sports medicine and athlete-care expertise to strengthen how our EMTs train and respond. You'll help make Smith EMS more sport-aware from the inside out.
- Provide virtual rehab guidance, recovery support, and return-to-play oversight for enrolled athletes
- Coordinate referrals to physicians and specialists throughout the Twin Cities
- Support athletes, parents, and coaches through the care process
- Contribute to sports medicine program development and EMT training under the Director of Development
- Complete platform onboarding and represent Smith EMS in client introductions
The schedule
This role grows as athletes enroll. To start, expect a minimum of 1 hour per week once athletes are active on the platform, ramping up as the program scales. You set your own office hours for appointments. Aside from occasional company meetings and scheduled client introductions, the work is fully virtual. Smith EMS may schedule specific availability windows now and then, for example to introduce you to a new client coming onto the platform.
Additional opportunity: This role is also eligible for PRN, per-diem onsite game coverage. When you want to pick up sideline work, you can take additional paid shifts covering live events. It's a great way to stay connected to game-day action and add hours on your own terms.
What you bring
- BOC-certified Athletic Trainer, licensed to practice in Minnesota (required)
- Familiarity with physicians and specialists across the Twin Cities (strongly preferred)
- Comfort with virtual, technology-based care delivery
- A self-starter who can manage their own hours and thrives in a build-it-as-we-go environment
- Genuine care for athletes and the people around them
Compensation
- $40/hour to start (W2, part-time)
- Commission opportunities on long-term care and return-to-play packages
