We're Hiring: Assistant Public Defenders (8 Open Positions)
The newly established Wharton-Matagorda Regional Public Defender Office is building its inaugural team and is seeking passionate attorneys committed to providing high-quality legal representation to individuals who cannot afford counsel.
We are hiring 8 Assistant Public Defenders with opportunities available for attorneys at various experience levels. Whether you're an experienced criminal defense attorney or a newer attorney looking to build a career in public defense, we'd love to hear from you.
Location: Wharton, Texas
Start Date: September 15, 2026 or October 1, 2026
About the Role
Assistant Public Defenders will represent indigent clients facing felony and misdemeanor criminal charges in Wharton and Matagorda Counties. Responsibilities include:
Managing felony and/or misdemeanor caseloads
Client representation in court
Trial preparation and jury trials
Assisting with additional misdemeanor cases as needed
This is an in-person position. Attorneys are expected to work from the office and appear in court daily. The office is located at:

Wharton, TX 77488
The position includes weekly travel to Matagorda County (approximately a 20-minute drive).
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $88,500–$110,000 annually (negotiable based on experience, particularly in public defense or criminal defense)

Qualifications
Applicants should have:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
Active membership in the State Bar of Texas in good standing
CANDIDATES WITH LIMITED LICENSURE AWAITING TEXAS BAR RESULTS WILL ALSO BE CONSIDERED
Experience representing clients in Texas criminal courts
Additional requirements:
Valid Texas driver's license
Reliable transportation
Ability to manage a demanding and diverse criminal caseload
Successful completion of a background check, employment physical, and drug screening
