Driver’s Job Description
General Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director or Site Supervisor, the Driver has the primary responsibility for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of the children, staff and volunteers during transportation to and from home, to the center and on field trips. It is also the role of the
Driver to: guarantee that the van is clean and in proper working condition at all times; determine and follow safe and efficient bus routes; ensure all children are in age appropriate child safety restraints; assist in ensuring child/staff ratio is maintained on the van; maintain all transportation records required by the program; ensure van evacuation drills are held at least monthly; and, evacuate children in case of emergency The Driver also acts as a link between the parents and the Daycare program.
Essential Functions:
1. Ensures the safety and well-being of children and adults being transported to and from the program and on field trips.
2. Completes a comprehensive written inspection of the van daily, reporting any conditions of concern to the Director, or delegated staff person, before transporting children.
3. Ensures that the communication device (e.g. two-way radio, cellular phone) is in proper working order before each trip.
4. Notifies Director of insufficient fuel levels prior to the completion of the day.
5. Notifies Director of insufficient fresh drinking water on the van.
6. In consultation with the Director, develops and follows efficient and safe written van routes that ensure no child will be on the bus more than one hour.
7. Operates bus in such a way that road and safety regulations are always followed; reports any traffic violations to the Director immediately.
8. Ensures all children are in age appropriate child safety restraints at all times during transportation.
9. Follows safe van loading and unloading procedures.
10. Follows procedures to guarantee no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time, including insuring all children have departed bus at the end of all bus routes
(morning, evening and during field trips or other special trips).
11. Assures that children who are visibly sick or complaining of feeling sick remain with their family. Informs designated staff person at the center of those children who will be absent.
12. Assures children's medications are received from parents and delivered to center following the delegate's procedures.
13. Follows other procedures developed by the delegate for receiving children (e.g., ensures children are freshly diapered; toys and bottles are left with parents, etc.)
14. Keeps the bus clean and free of debris; follows other van cleaning procedures.
15. Routinely inventories bus emergency and first aid supplies and equipment, reports needs to the Director, or delegated staff person.
16. With the Family Partnership Coordinator, identifies those persons authorized by the parents/guardians to receive the children. Delivers children only to the authorized persons. Follows Child Sign-In/Sign-Out procedures.
17. Delivers messages and other items to and from the parents.

18. Prepares children for van drills and ensures van evacuation drills are held at least monthly. Documents all drills in writing.
19. In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures.
20. In the event of an accident, assures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written accident report as required by delegate's procedure and other authorities.
21. Attends and participates in center pre-service and in-service trainings, and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
22. Performs other duties, as assigned.

Recommended Employment Qualifications
Education:
Possess a current and valid Illinois Driver’s License, and be certified in First Aid and CPR for all age groups transported.
Experience:
Knowledge of the challenges and strengths of low-income and migrant families. Effective oral and written communication skills commensurate with the responsibilities of the position are required.
Additional Requirements:
Ability to pass an annual physical which includes a tuberculosis test and drug test. Must be able to comply with background check, including fingerprints, as required by the agency and/or
Illinois Licensing Agency. Regular access to a reliable vehicle; have a valid Illinois driver's license. Ability to present a positive image of the organization to members of the community.
Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed. Must be free of communicable diseases and breathing impairments. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a motor vehicle, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the van of all debris that may have been left behind. Must have effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills. Ability to learn and comprehend information from Procedures Manuals and other materials. Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs required. Must be able to physically move in and out of the van, center and classrooms. Ability to lift 55 pounds is required. Ability to perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies. Successful experience working as an effective member of a team desirable.
Experience successfully working with a culturally diverse staff & clients also desirable. Must possess personal qualifications as required in Section 407.100 of the Illinois Licensing Standards for Day Care Centers, including: emotional maturity, willingness to cooperate with the aims of

Working Conditions:
Tasks that involve infrequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids or tissues. Risk involved with travel on main highway, side streets and rural roads during business travel and including evenings. Tasks that involve handling implements or utensils, use of public or shared bathroom facilities or telephones and personal contacts are Category III tasks. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. This job involves sitting for long periods as well as stooping, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and climbing. Able to work a flexible schedule. Must be able to travel, enter, and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions. Random drug tests may be performed.
