Expected Results:
- Develop, implement and sustain effective safety and health systems and processes designed to eliminate injuries, minimize risk, maintain regulatory compliance and reduce losses.
- Provide leadership in the transformation of a safety culture based on employee involvement and engagement.
- Possess a strong “shop floor” presence and serve as a coach/mentor to provide all employees with the skills needed to identify and resolve safety issues.
- Ensure continuous improvement and continuity of established safety policies, programs and processes.
Supporting Activities:
- Analyze safety-related issues and concerns, incident investigations and trends to recommend courses of action/corrective action to prevent recurrence.
- Support the Company safety management system and data management system.
- Facilitate incident investigations, root cause analysis, and closure of corrective actions.
- Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment, to minimize the hazardous potential (e.g. lockout, confined space entry, hot work, etc.).
- Manage Union-hourly safety representatives and provide direction to their day-to-day activities.
- Provide insight, strategies and plans to achieve Plant goals based upon best practice information.
- Establish and implement Plant-wide safety communications to ensure employees are aware of potential hazards and unsafe conditions.
- Collaborate with other Appvion locations to share and adopt best practices.
- Develop and conduct employee safety and health training and emergency preparedness.
- Measure, audit, evaluate and improve the effectiveness of safety programs.
- Direct and coordinate the administration of OSHA regulations, including review interpretation, and implementation of standards. Ensure accurate reporting as required.
- Develop and administer company safety policies and procedures.
- Work closely with the Company Medical Director and Occupational Health Nurse on Workers Compensation cases and other issues.
- Co-chair the Plant-wide Safety Steering Team.
Required Prior Accomplishments, Experience, Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in safety sciences, Environmental Science, or closely related field (CSP preferred or working towards certificate).
- Minimum of 5 - 7 years professional safety and health experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong leadership skills, experience driving cultural change and the ability to influence others while delivering results.
- Experience with emergency response (e.g. first aid, CPR, confined space rescue, spill & fire) preferred.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize as needed.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to interact with all levels of management and hourly personnel.
- Proficient in the use of computer software (Word, Excel, Power Point).
- Prior experience in a union environment preferred.
