We're seeking a skilled Construction Field Surveyor to join our growing team and play a critical role in delivering site development and heavy civil construction projects throughout the Greater Richmond region.
As a Construction Field Surveyor with Liesfeld Contractor, you'll be the link between engineering plans and field execution—providing the layout, grade control, and precision required to keep projects moving safely, efficiently, and accurately. Working with advanced GPS and surveying technology, you'll support a wide variety of projects including site development, grading, underground utilities, storm drainage systems, and other civil infrastructure improvements.
This role offers a strong balance of independent field work and team collaboration. You’ll work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Engineers, and field crews to solve challenges in real time and keep projects moving forward with accuracy and confidence.
The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride in precise work, enjoys problem-solving in the field, and understands how critical surveying is to the success of every project. This position requires 2–5 years of civil construction surveying experience, strong proficiency with modern surveying equipment, and exceptional attention to detail in active field environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform site layout, measurements, and verification to ensure work aligns with plans and specifications
- Establish and maintain control points for structures, utilities, elevations, and alignments
- Operate Topcon GPS/GNSS systems, total stations, and digital levels to collect accurate field data
- Provide layout and grade information to support construction crews throughout all phases of work
- Interpret construction plans, blueprints, and survey data to guide field operations
- Coordinate closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure accuracy and efficiency
- Identify and communicate discrepancies to prevent errors and rework
- Maintain accurate field notes, data collection, and documentation
- Uphold company safety standards and ensure compliance with all jobsite requirements
Required Qualifications
- 2–5 years of experience in civil construction surveying.
- High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Proficiency with GPS/GNSS systems, total stations, and surveying software.
- Strong understanding of construction plans, grades, and site development practices.
- Ability to work independently in outdoor, field-based environments.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
- Ability to navigate uneven terrain, slopes, and active construction sites for extended periods
- Ability to lift, carry, and set up surveying equipment up to 50 lbs
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and climb as needed for field measurements and setup
- Ability to maintain visual focus and precision when operating surveying instruments
- Ability to work safely around heavy equipment, traffic, and active construction operations
- Ability to consistently wear and utilize all required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company and safety standards
