Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and energetic Heavy Truck Transportation Manager to lead our freight operations in the La Grange, NC area with (Frequent travel to other company yards required) This pivotal role involves overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of heavy trucks and freight across regional routes. Lead the transportation backbone of a fast-paced scrap metal recycling operation. You’ll manage a fleet of heavy trucks, dispatch logistics, and a team of CDL drivers to deliver safe, on-time, cost-effective hauls across NC and beyond. As a Transportation Manager, you will drive operational excellence by managing a team of drivers, coordinating logistics, and ensuring adherence to safety standards. Duties
- Fleet & Shop Leadership
- Command a mixed fleet: roll-offs, end dumps, van trailers, open-tops, equipment haulers.
- Track KPIs: repair TAT, cost/mile, downtime % making sure we are tracking KPIs will need to be in place.
- Audit tech productivity and repair quality.
- Green-light upgrades and process tweaks.
- Own the budget: parts, tools, labor, vendor deals.
- Lead and supervise a team of heavy truck drivers, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback to ensure operational efficiency.
- Develop and implement transportation schedules that maximize route efficiency while adhering to delivery deadlines.
- Oversee compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including safety standards and licensing requirements.
- Coordinate with logistics teams to plan freight pickups and deliveries, ensuring timely execution of shipments.
- Monitor vehicle maintenance schedules to ensure all trucks are in optimal condition, reducing downtime and enhancing safety.
- Conduct regular safety audits and driver performance evaluations to uphold the highest safety standards across operations.
- Manage documentation related to freight movement, driver logs, inspection reports, and incident reports with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Foster strong relationships with carriers, vendors, and internal teams to streamline communication and resolve operational issues swiftly.
- Utilize transportation management systems (TMS) and other technology tools to track shipments, analyze data, and improve route planning.
- Promote a safety-first culture by conducting training sessions on safe driving practices and regulatory compliance.
Experience
- 5+ years fleet/transportation management—heavy haul, scrap, or waste experience a big plus.
Benefits Proven experience in heavy truck transportation management or logistics leadership within a regional or national operation.
- Deep DOT/FMCSA fluency; you can recite Part 395 in your sleep.
- Hands-on with roll-offs, end dumps, RGNs, vans, open-tops.
- Proven shop oversight and budget ownership.
- Comfortable with Motive, Fleetio, TMW, or similar TMS/FMS.
- CDL Class A preferred (clean record required either way).
- Leadership that gets diesel under the fingernails but still reads a spreadsheet.
- Strong knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, safety protocols, and licensing requirements for commercial vehicles.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams effectively while maintaining high levels of motivation and engagement.
- Excellent organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Proficiency in transportation management software (TMS), GPS tracking systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Exceptional communication skills for coordinating with drivers, clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to analyze operational data to identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Nice-to-have skills include experience with fleet maintenance programs, route optimization tools, or industry-specific certifications such as Certified Transportation Professional (CTP).
