Job Summary
Responsibilities
- Load and unload freight using manual handling techniques or equipment such as forklifts, ensuring cargo is secured properly for transit
- Transport various types of cargo including hazardous materials (hazmat), dangerous goods, refrigerated items, and specialty freight like tanker or flatbed loads
- Use GPS navigation systems to follow optimized routes, plan deliveries efficiently, and adapt to route changes as needed
- Maintain accurate logs of driving hours, delivery records, and vehicle inspections in accordance with FMCSA regulations
- Conduct routine vehicle inspections before and after trips; perform basic maintenance checks to ensure safety standards are met
- Communicate effectively with dispatchers regarding delivery schedules, route adjustments, or any issues encountered during transit
Skills
- Proven experience in commercial truck driving with a focus on route driving and delivery driving
- Knowledge of truck loading and unloading procedures for various trailer types including refrigerated trailers, flatbeds, tankers, and dump trucks
- Familiarity with hazardous materials regulations (Hazmat) and dangerous goods handling procedures
- Ability to operate manual transmission trucks confidently; experience with manual handling is essential
- Proficiency in GPS navigation systems for route planning and real-time navigation adjustments
- Strong understanding of FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations and DOT (Department of Transportation) safety standards
- Skilled in logistics cargo handling including load securement techniques for different trailer types
- Experience with forklift operation for loading/unloading freight when necessary
- Excellent driving skills with a clean driving record; experience with over-the-road (OTR) routes preferred
- Ability to handle physically demanding tasks such as manual handling of freight and truck loading/unloading operations
