General Description:
The Coach Specialist is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum (LSRM ) collection, North Shore Scenic Railroad (NSSR) operating trains, and the Lenard Draper Maintenance Shop. Working hours, tasks, and skills are wide-ranging to support a dynamic museum and railroad operation. Applicants must be able to work independently and be willing to learn a wide range of skills. Work schedule is primarily weekdays, but some weekends or evenings may be required. Primary Duties are the inspection and upkeep of all railcars in the organization.
Specific roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Weekly NSSR fleet upkeep: fueling, reservoir draining, air filters, lighting, repairs, etc...
- Complete tasks from the Shop Repair List based on assigned priorities
- Facilitate volunteer workdays and assist with their tasks safely and successfully
- Perform timely brake system inspections on railcars per 49 CFR 232 Subpart H requirements
- Maintain an inventory of consumables, personal protective equipment, parts and tools
- Maintain the shop, vehicles and yard in a clean and organized state
- Control equipment movements on shop tracks as qualified
- Assist other shop staff as needed, especially with locomotive inspections as qualified
- Perform repairs on railcars in compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Association of American Railroads (AAR), and American Public Transportation Association (APTA) regulations
- Fill out required recordkeeping for rail equipment maintenance and operation
- Work with the Shop Foreman to develop standard operating procedures for the shop
- Support accurate, timely and reliable budgets and financial reports
Requirements:
- 2+ years schooling in the trades or equivalent work experience (see Preferred Skills)
- Ability to work 8-10 hour days on your feet in any weather condition
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, occasionally up to 75 pounds, more with assistance
- Must have balance and coordination to step on and off rail equipment and work from ladders
- Must be able to walk, sit, stand and stoop on various surfaces (rock, concrete, snow, etc)
- Conduct themselves with safety of the employees, volunteers and public in mind at all times
- Legible handwriting and basic computer skills (MS Office and Google Workspace)
- Flexibility in scheduling, possible weekends and occasional overtime with approval
- Develop a solid understanding of HVAC, plumbing, electrical and other mechanical systems
- Maintain 49 CFR 232 Airbrake Inspection and 49 CFR 218 Blue Signal Protection Qualification
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
Preferred Skills:
Fleet or facility maintenance and the ability to rapidly shift between preventative and breakdown responsibilities. Successful candidates posses shop- or field - based skills in any of the following trades: electrical, HVAC, plumbing, welding, wood/metal working, painting, hydraulics/pneumatics, reading/understanding technical prints, or reading/understanding federal and state regulations
Benefits:
This is a full-time position paid hourly at a rate starting at $22/hour and based on experience. Successful applicants will receive all company benefits that include: fully paid Medica individual health insurance, paid vacation, PTO and sick time, and company contribution of 5% into a 401k account (once fully vested). LSRM provides boots and hi-vis PPE, but not prescription safety glasses.
Additional Information:
The is a "Safety Sensitive" position which is governed by Federal Law. Employees who hold this position are subject to random drug and alcohol screening at any time while on duty. As a museum educational institution, background checks will be conducted for all finalists.
In addition to the above responsibilities, all Museum employees are responsible for conducting themselves in a professional manner. Every employee is equally important to safe and effective Museum operations. Because of the unique nature of museum work, it sometimes becomes necessary to assume additional responsibilities when directed by management and/or the Board of Directors. Although this may not be detailed in your job description, it should be considered part of your job.
About the LSRM Lenard Draper Maintenance Shop:
The Draper Shop exists to implement the mission of the Museum: "preserving, interpreting, and presenting to the public the history of Railroading, especially as it relates to our area." The Lake Superior Railroad Museum is housed in the St. Louis County Depot, a historical landmark, and provides guests with an immersive step back in time to when railroads played a larger role in local life and industry. The Museum cares for a collection of artifacts, documents, and rail equipment unique to the Upper Midwest. Museum locomotives and railcars are used for tourist train operations on the North Shore Scenic Railroad, which is a subsidiary of LSRM.
