Position Summary
The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is seeking a motivated attorney to join our office as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney handling criminal matters. This position provides an opportunity to take meaningful responsibility for criminal cases while working closely with law enforcement, victims, witnesses, court personnel, and fellow prosecutors.
The Deputy Prosecuting Attorney will handle a criminal caseload consisting of misdemeanors and, depending upon experience and demonstrated ability, felony cases. Prior prosecution experience is not required. We are willing to train a new attorney who has good judgment, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to justice and public service.
We are looking for an attorney who understands that a prosecutor’s responsibility is not simply to obtain convictions, but to seek justice, exercise sound discretion, protect the community, and ensure that criminal cases are handled fairly and professionally.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Deputy Prosecuting Attorney is responsible for handling assigned criminal cases from beginning to end, including:
- Reviewing law enforcement reports, evidence, and investigative materials.
- Making charging decisions and preparing criminal complaints, informations, motions, and other court filings.
- Handling misdemeanor and felony cases as assigned based upon experience and ability.
- Appearing in court for arraignments, pretrial conferences, motion hearings, evidentiary hearings, trials, sentencing hearings, and other proceedings.
- Conducting legal research and preparing written motions, briefs, and responses.
- Evaluating cases and exercising appropriate prosecutorial discretion.
- Negotiating plea agreements when appropriate.
- Preparing cases for trial, including reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, preparing exhibits, and developing trial strategy.
- Conducting jury and bench trials.
- Working directly with law enforcement officers and agencies throughout the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases.
- Communicating professionally and compassionately with victims and witnesses.
- Ensuring compliance with constitutional, statutory, ethical, and discovery obligations.
- Advising law enforcement regarding criminal investigations, search warrants, charging issues, and other legal matters as appropriate.
- Managing deadlines and maintaining an organized caseload.
- Performing other duties associated with the prosecution of criminal matters as assigned.

- Be organized and capable of managing multiple cases and deadlines.
- Be willing to learn, accept feedback, and develop as a prosecutor and trial attorney.
- Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Experience
Experienced attorneys and new attorneys are encouraged to apply.
Case assignments will be based upon the attorney’s experience, demonstrated ability, and professional development. A new attorney may begin primarily with misdemeanor matters and progress to felony cases as the attorney gains experience. An attorney with prior criminal or trial experience may be assigned felony matters based upon qualifications.
The office is committed to providing training, mentoring, and courtroom experience to attorneys who are new to prosecution.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Idaho, or eligible to obtain the required Idaho licensure within an acceptable timeframe.
- Ability to satisfy all requirements applicable to employment as a prosecuting attorney.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as necessary for court appearances, training, and other official duties.

Pay: $89,000.00 - $107,000.00 per year
