Job Title: Project Accountant (Commercial Construction)
Location: Chicago, IL
Compensation: $75,000+ base (DOE) + benefits
About the Opportunity
Tiello is currently partnered with an established Commercial Roofing Contractor in the Chicago market with a strong presence in the commercial roofing and architectural sheet metal industry.They are looking to expand their Accounting Team by adding a Project Accountant to support the financial and administrative functions of our service operations team. This role is responsible for end-to-end service billing, collections, job cost documentation, and interfacing with both internal departments and external clients. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of construction accounting principles and the project lifecycle, including work order processing, job setup, and financial reconciliation.
Key Responsibilities:
Billing & Collections
- Generate, review, and issue all service-related invoices in compliance with company policies and contract terms.
- Monitor accounts receivable aging reports and actively follow up on delinquent accounts.
- Verify receipt of payments and reconcile discrepancies related to service billing.
- Attend and report on outstanding accounts in weekly collections meetings, providing status updates and recommended actions.
Accounting & Documentation Support
- Set up new service jobs in the accounting system, ensuring proper cost coding and contract setup aligned with project scope.
- Process and track material purchase orders for service jobs, ensuring alignment with job budgets and vendor terms.
- Act as a liaison between the Service Department and Accounting to resolve billing issues, payment application concerns, and job costing discrepancies.
- Assist with month-end close activities including revenue recognition, cost accruals, and job cost reporting.
Administrative & Client Communication
- Respond to customer and internal inquiries regarding invoices, proposals, payments, and job documentation.
- Draft and distribute business correspondence including memos, reports, and customer proposals.
- Maintain accurate service project documentation including signed work orders, change orders, contracts, and compliance certificates.
- Organize and manage both electronic and hard-copy filing systems for service-related financial and project documentation.
- Track proposal follow-ups and assist in converting opportunities into active service jobs.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in billing, collections, or project accounting within the construction or related service industry.
- Understanding of construction billing types (T&M, fixed price, cost-plus), lien rights, and retention policies.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to work cross-functionally across departments.
- Detail-oriented with strong time management and organizational skills.
