The Detention Officer reports directly to the Detention Corporal and will provide the primary means by which inmates are supervised and cared for. A wide variety of duties fall upon this position to specifically and directly ensure the safe, secure and legally based operation of the detention operation daily.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions
● Responsible for relaying information and instructions to the inmates.
● Takes inmate requests and concerns and addresses them where needed and when possible. Informs supervisors when concerns cannot be addressed directly.
● Responsible for making sure all inmates are aware of the rules and regulations of the facility.
● Conducts housing unit and cell checks to ensure that inmates and daily activities are in accordance with policy and procedures.
● Maintains housing unit order.
● Remains aware and knowledgeable of emergency procedures vital to maintaining good order and discipline.
● Maintains proper care and maintenance of all aspects of the facility and reports shortcomings to chain of command in a timely manner. This may entail general custodial work and notifying chain of command of any damaged fixtures or incidents that are deemed worthy.
● Provides meals following the proper guidelines of the feeding schedule and facility policy and procedures.
● Handles the collection of laundry within the housing units.
● Assists the medical staff in the distribution of medications.
● Handles the collection and distribution of incoming and outgoing mail.
● Processes detainees into custody and the legal system. This involves recording information such as fingerprints, picture profiles and updating personal records.
● Conducts proper searches when appropriate and necessary as directed.
● Assists the intake and release process.
● Responds to emergency calls and assists fellow officers as required.
● Addresses violations of policy and procedures and guidelines for operations appropriately and in a timely manner.
● Perform escorts of inmates within the secure perimeter of the facility.
● Any of duties as assigned to ensure a proper, safe, and secure detention operation.

Qualifications and Credentials
· Professional minded individual.
· High School Diploma or GED.
· Physically able to stand for long periods of time.
· Physically able to perform self defense techniques when necessary.
· Physically able to lift up to 40lbs.
· Dedicated to the job and able to work flexible hours
· Able to respond to unscheduled work requests occasionally if needed.
