Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Outside Machinist to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting marine and water transportation equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Your expertise in mechanical systems, electrical diagnostics, and rigging will be essential to keep our fleet operating smoothly. Responsibilities
- Install, remove, overhaul, and repair marine mechanical equipment including pumps, valves, compressors, turbines, gearboxes, and propulsion system components.
- Perform precision alignment of rotating equipment using dial indicators, laser alignment tools, and precision measuring instruments.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, and technical manuals.
- Disassemble, inspect, troubleshoot, and reassemble mechanical systems aboard ships and submarines.
- Install bearings, seals, couplings, shafts, and other mechanical components.
- Conduct equipment testing and operational checks following installation and repair.
- Erect, modify, inspect, and dismantle staging (scaffolding) in accordance with OSHA and shipyard safety standards.
- Safely work at heights, in confined spaces, and aboard vessels under construction or repair.
- Coordinate work activities with welders, pipefitters, electricians, riggers, and other shipyard trades.
- Maintain accurate documentation of completed work and inspections.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, Navy standards, environmental requirements, and company safety policies.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Three or more years of marine outside machinist experience in a shipyard or marine repair environment preferred.
- Demonstrated experience erecting and dismantling staging/scaffolding.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical manuals.
- Experience with precision measuring equipment and mechanical alignment techniques.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, propulsion, and auxiliary marine systems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance, if applicable.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as an outside machinist or service technician in marine or water transportation environments.
- Strong mechanical knowledge with expertise in marine engine repair, mechanical systems repair, and marine propulsion systems maintenance.
- Electrical experience including electrical diagnostics, troubleshooting marine electrical systems, interpreting schematics, and working with ohmmeters.
- Hands-on experience with rigging, fabrication, welding, soldering, sheet metal work, and the use of power tools.
- Familiarity with ship electrical systems maintenance and watercraft-specific mechanical components.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings accurately and perform precision measurements using calipers or other instruments.
- Experience with maintenance, repair & operations (MRO), heavy lifting techniques, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Military background or service technician experience is a plus due to the disciplined approach required for safety and troubleshooting standards.
- Excellent customer service skills combined with a proactive attitude toward problem-solving and teamwork.
