Job Overview:
The roller operator is a key member of the paving crew, tasked with responsibly and efficiently operating the roller to deliver a smooth and compacted finished asphalt product. This role requires precision, teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently under physically demanding conditions to ensure high-quality results that meet project specifications.
The paving crew does not pave every day. The person hired would be expected to perform as a general crew member when not operating a roller.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate & maintain several different rollers to ensure a solid finish.
- Assist in preparing the work area by clearing debris, setting grades, and ensuring proper base conditions.
- Work closely with paving machine operators and laborers to achieve a smooth, uniform finish.
- Adjust asphalt thickness and texture to match project plans and supervisor instructions.
- Perform minor repairs or patching on asphalt surfaces as needed.
- Monitor material consistency and temperature to ensure proper application.
- Maintain tools and equipment, keeping them clean and in good working order.
- Follow safety protocols to protect yourself and the crew during paving operations.
- Assist with cleanup and site maintenance after paving tasks are completed.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience in asphalt paving or general construction is required.
- Familiarity with asphalt tools and paving processes.
- Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Physical strength and endurance to handle heavy materials and long hours outdoors.
- Basic understanding of grades, slopes, and surface preparation techniques.
- Commitment to safety practices and awareness of hazards like hot asphalt and heavy machinery.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred; on-the-job training provided.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor construction sites with exposure to hot asphalt, weather extremes, dust, and noise.
- Requires standing, bending, and lifting for extended periods; may involve irregular hours.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.00 - $37.00 per hour
