Job Summary
This is a customer service position that connects patrons to our services and collections, while striving to maintain a welcoming environment in the library. Primarily stationed at information desks located at library entrances, Library Assistants support effective access to resources and collections. They provide high-quality service in person, by phone, and online, and assist in fulfilling both electronic and physical resource requests. This role also supports responsible use of library spaces. Assistants help maintain a respectful environment by professionally identifying and reporting behavior that does not align with library policies. This is an entry-level position with the opportunity for advancement within five months, based on demonstrated reliability and consistent performance.
For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception is granted.
Responsibilities
Greet patrons and assist with checking materials in and out
Process holds, renewals, returns, and overdue fines
Help users locate books, journals, media, and other resources
Provide general library information and basic research assistance, including support with electronic journals and research databases
Refer patrons to librarians or subject specialists when appropriate
Answer questions about library policies, hours, and services
Connect students to campus academic support services, including advising, tutoring, the registrar, and financial aid, as part of the Answer U service
Perform cashier functions related to circulation and the library store
Assist with opening and closing procedures
Monitor study spaces and report behavioral concerns
Ensure compliance with library and University policies
Manage lost and found items
Report maintenance, facilities, and infrastructure issues promptly
Assist in emergency situations, including medical incidents, evacuations, severe weather, and shelter-in-place events, in coordination with library and campus partners

Success in this role requires strong interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills. Employees must be prepared to respond effectively to any situation—including emergencies—while remaining calm under pressure. Integrity and accountability are essential, as staff are expected to act with honesty and take full responsibility for their decisions and actions.
Current University of Utah student enrolled in a minimum of 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.
